CPI hopes to perform better in next polls.
- ------------------------------------------------------------------
The Communist Party of India (CPI) which was nowhere in the reckoning
attributed its defeat to the weak organisational strength in the state
and the role played by money power in the elections.
Mr Christopher Fonseca, state general secretary of CPI revealed
that while the national party was dissatisfied with their poor performance,
incidentally their maiden attempt, the party hoped to perform better
during the next elections which would be sooner than expected
due to the fractured mandate given by the voters.
However, Mr Fonseca expressed his pleasure over the victory
of the CPI, CPI(M) supported United Goans Democratic Party (UGDP)
candidate, Mr Mathany Saldanha, who defeated Mr Mauvin Godinho
(Congress) in the Cortalim constituency.
He however lamented "The main issues of increasing poverty and
unemployment were sidelined by non-isues which were given prominence.
The total breakdown of infrastructure like power and water supply,
industrial and agricultural development of Goa took a back seat.
The voters will be helpless and unhappy after casting their votes
as this fractured mandate will result in an unstable government
and elections will be held sooner than required,
at the expense of the tax payers".

Subject: [Goanet] Election results.
GOA ELECTION RESULTS.
Finally the election on May 30th was held and people elected those whom they
wanted to elect. It is their birth right to perform their democratic duty
and they did it however much many of us may disagree with their choice.
Those who think the voting process should be left into the hands of the
voters only and nobody should instruct or guide them whom to vote and whom
not to vote are mistaken. Those who are politically and morally matured got
duty to guide the voters in the right direction and this was exactly been
done by the politically matured people though their success might not have
been perfect. Many people asked me thus what was the use of your barking
from Kuwait continuously against defectors and other rogues?. It was not me
alone, innumerable people took part in campaigning for the upright people
and if it was not for their relentless efforts in guiding and enlightening
the voters even from distant places the achieved results would not have been
possible. This result was realized only after barking and harping for days
and days prior to the election day. Never I saw expatriate and Goa based
Goans so forcefully taking part in campaigning for the right candidates.
>From this trend I can rightly say that expatriate Goans are now awakened. I
am sure they can now create a mighty force of theirs towards guiding and
protecting Goan affairs back at home.Thru this unity and force of
expatriates Goans we can now easily embark on more important aspects of Goan
life. It is time now for expatriate Goans to think further in the right
direction for the good of Goa and Goans. With this momentum gained during
the last election expatriate Goans should further unify to challenge the
brute might of rogue politicians in Goa. I am sure expatriate Goans are
capable of doing this. In the past Kuwait Goans have shown the way during
the Konkani Language and Statehood agitation. Now the circle of Goa lover
expatriate Goans is tremendously increased and as such we should captalise
on this expansion.
The rise of BJP was the due to the fall of MGP which never gave us people
like me who are Goa and Konkani lover peaceful time. MGP was a curse on
Goan soil. This party of rascals from nowhere brought Marathi and tried to
impose on Goans. These rogues who were protagonists of Marathi were neither
conversant with Marathi. These MGP rogues from nowhere tried to uproot Goa
and dump it into Maharastra eventhough they themselves whould not have been
happy and welcomed with open arms by the Maharastrians. The defeat of
Shashikala Kakodkar the daughter of Goas traitor Dayananda Bandodkar was
fabulously applauded by many in Kuwait so also of Ramakant Khalap. It is
these MGP stalwarts that gave push to BJP in Goa thru back door and now they
are suffering. Now they have two members in the Assembly but gradually they
too will evaporate like ether. In order to fight with MGP we the genuine Goa
lover Goans had to make lot of sacrificies and by doing such sacrifices we
managed to conquer over their policies. Now MGP is finished but BJP is
come. Beetween the two, BJP will turn out to be greater monster and for
this reason we have to be very cautious. The Assembly term of the newly
elected MLAs will not last for 5 years, their MLAship will be for a short
duration like a honey moon. For this reason those who are elected should not
think of turning themselves into short term Emperors. They should not act
like Maharajas and Hitlers. We have seen how so many having above
attributes were dumped into the Sea by the clever voters. Korta tea Mapan
bhogta ani bhogta te atam kayat patoeo. Many of those who are defeated
were acting like dadas against the people. They were not voted earlier by
the people to allow them to act like dadas. By acting like dadas they
infuriarated the voters who finally dumped them into khachra Dobo.
Bhogat atam.
Those non-BJP MLAs joined the Ministry should not surrender to BJP policies
wholesome as George Fernandes doing in Delhi. Geoge Fernandes has got no
principle, no morality and no discipline. He is totally absorbed by BJP. He
lost his former greatness and charm. Mickey Pacheco and Babush should never
allow Parrikar and his BJP to communalise Goa as MGP did once. It was
surprising how these non-BJP members betrayed the trust of the voters and
joined BJP. Did their voters gave them liberty to join BJP at the time of
voting them or by taking into confidence only a few of their chamcha
supporters they joined BJP? The voters should publicly question this. As
for me those who joined BJP after the election are traitors. They are
partners in the crime committed by BJP in Gujarat. Babush Monsurate made
himself another Zuwarkar by following the foot-steps of his predecessor. One
Zuwarkar gone and in its place another defector Zuwarkar came. Taleigao
voters should take note of this especially the educated youth who created
the latest revolution in Goa against many of the defectors. Those non-BJP
MLAs who joined BJP Government are partners in the crime committed by BJP
supprted Government in killing Staines and other Christians. Babush, Mickey
and even Francis Desouza and and probably both the MGP MLAs can easily
control 17 MLAs of BJP by forcing BJP to act totally different from Delhi
and Gujarat. Mathanay Saldanha has shown his real colours by sticking to
his independence. By being outside he can easily gain maximum benefit of
course with the help of his other two colleagues.
I must now impress upon Mickey Pacheco not to be vindictive in his dealings
as lot of stories are circulated in Kuwait. Mickey and other giant killers
are elected not to show revenge but to do what their predecessors have
failed to do. This is not the time for revenge but to do something good for
Goa and Goans. Babush must also come out spotless against the campaign
carried out over his supposed ill doings in Miramar Sex Scandal. Both these
politicians must know that they are given mandate by the voters to do good
not only for their constituencies but also for the entire Goa and not to
take revenge for their selfish ends. I understand both are moneyed people.
By being so will they refrain from accepting bribes directly and indirectly
from the people for doing their jobs? Or will they both be bribe prones?
They will show their real character now and time alone will prove their
worth.
The party that many of us supported Goa Suraj has failed no doubt but its
presence on Goan election arena has created lot of opposition for many of
the gigantic figures and precisely because Goa Suraj party was a force to
reckon with, its opponents in Calangute Constituency and elsewhere created
false stories of the withdrawal of Goa Suraj Party candidates. It is Goa
Suraj Partys presence in Goa during the recently held election gave scare
to many to be more upright. It is the presence of Goa Suraj Party in Goa
that helped the voters to make right choice. Never mind Goa Suraj Party
lost but thru loss they created solid impact on the recently concluded
election in Goa. Best of luck for all the elected MLAs and my prayers for
them to take good care of Goa and Goans.
A. VERONICA FERNANDES,
Kuwait.

GOACOM NEWS CLIPPINGS
07 June 2002
MAJORDA PARISH COUNCIL TAKES UP FOR PRIEST: The Executive Committee of the
Parish Pastoral Council of Majorda Church has strongly objected to the
false accusations traded by Churchill Alemao against Majorda Parish Priest
Fr Leonardo Correia and the clergy of Goa. The panel said that they have
been attending church services regularly and at no instance did the priest
ever advised the faithful to vote for any particular candidate. (GT)
FISHING BAN FROM TODAY: The state government has imposed a ban on fishing
in Goa waters beginning from June 7 to August 15, in accordance with the
interim order given by the High Court last year. The UGDP, a partner in the
BJ-led coalition government has demanded complete ban on fishing along Goan
waters to protect the breeding season and marine life in its 16-point
programme. Mathany Saldanha told reporters yesterday that he would fight to
protect the breeding period. (NT)
CONGRESS SLAMS REPORTS ON DIFFERENCES: The Congress Legislature Party
reacted strongly to reports that it was "divided" saying the propaganda was
being orchestrated by the BJP only to create a public perception that their
own ship was stable. (H)
BUS FARES WILL NOT BE HIKED: Transport minister Pandurang Madkaikar
yesterday assured that the recent hike in petrol and diesel prices would
not spark off an increase in bus fares in the State. (H)
FALL-OUT OF FRACTURED MANDATE: The United Goans Party seems to be squeezing
out the most from the Bharatiya Janata Party, the coalition leader. After
securing plum portfolios for its two members, UGDP has come out with ideas
like common minimum programme and constitution of a steering committee
comprising representatives of the three-party combine. Apparently, the
local outfit is trying to exercise abundant caution lest BJP subjects it to
a shock treatment on issues of vital importance to the Sate and the party.
(Edit in GT)
FENNY FOR WINE AND SPIRITS 'WORLD CUP': "Big Boss", the leading cashew and
coconut fenny brand of Goa from the stable of Madame Rosa Distillery is
participating at the International Spirits Challenge 2002 competition that
is held annually in London organised by "Quest" Magazine. This challenge is
considered the world cup of the industry and Fenny from India has entered
in the ethnic exotic white spirit category. Madame Rosa Distillery have now
exported their leading brands Big Boss, Serenade and PVV to Abu Dhabi,
Qatar and Sharjah. (GT)
MATHANY RESIGNS FROM ZILLA PANCHAYAT: Cortalim MLA-elect, Mr Mathany
Saldanha, has conveyed his decision to resign as the Cortalim Zilla Panch
in accordance with the provisions of the law but will continue to strive
for decentralization of powers for this local self-government body. (NT)
SIOLIM BRIDGE COMPLETION: Nearly a decade since the foundation stone of the
bridge was laid, the Siolim-Chopdem bridge has run past numerous deadlines
due to technological and political reasons. In a bid to end further
uncertainties to the troubled bridge, the newly elected Mandrem MLA
Laximikant Parsekar inspected the site and assured that the bridge would be
thrown open to traffic on June 28. (H)
MOTORCYCLE ROBBED: Margarute Monteiro, a resident of Vansionwada, Keri, has
lodged a complaint with the police saying some unknown persons robbed his
Yamaha Motorcycle, parked in the compound. (NT)
NARVEKAR, A FORCE IN BARDEZ: You may hate him or you may arrest him, but
you just cannot ignore him. Dayanand Narvekar has shown his prowess not
only in winning an election but also playing a crucial role in the State's
political arena. Narvekar not only managed to get a Congress ticket but
also managed to change his constituency preferring his former stronghold
Aldona to Tivim. (H)
CONCRETISATION OF CITY ROADS: The Panjim Municipal Council yesterday
accorded the green signal to Bangalore-based India International
Infrastructure Engineers Ltd to begin a survey and an engineering study of
roads in the capital city proposed for concretization. (H)
UNDERTRIAL'S ESCAPE: For the second time, the court has been unable to pass
any judgment on rape accused Arjun Dhakne of Vasco, as once again he has
slipped from the clutches of justice, escaping from jail while still on
trial. Dhakne, one of those allegedly involved in a gang rape of a couple
of Swedes, had escaped from the jail on May 24. (H)
BRITISH FOREIGN OFFICE'S TRAVEL ADVISE: The British Foreign Office has
revised its travel advice to British nationals for India and Pakistan and
urged them that they 'should' leave. As a result of the continuing tensions
between the two countries, the Foreign Office has modified its earlier
advice to 'consider' leaving the country to a more serious tenor. (GT)
220 WORKING DAYS FOR SCHOOLS: Schools in the State should maintain a
minimum of 220 working days and 195 instructional days during the academic

The vacation break for all schools for Diwali is from November 1 to 16 and
mid-term break from December 24 to January 2, 2003. The summer vacations
are from April 28 to June 7. (H)
MAYEM EVACUEE PROPERTY OWNER'S PLEA: The Panjim Bench of the Bombay High
Court has admitted the petition filed by Antonio SC Pereira, owner of
evacuee property in Mayem, Bicholim, challenging the laws protecting
Mundkars from eviction due to which the High Court's own prior directives
could not be followed. (H)
CAUSE OF POOR WATER SUPPLY: Poor water management policy of the government,
and not shortage of rainfall, has been the main reason for the decline in
water supply in the State, claimed Padmashree Norma Alvares. She was
speaking at a seminar on fresh water management, organised by the
Inspectorate of Factories and Boilers and the Green Triangle Society, to
mark the World Environment Day. "Instead of conserving the water, we are
polluting it," she added. (H)
