WOMAN INJURED IN ANOTHER LANDSLIDE IN MAPUSA: In the second landslide, near 
the Mapusa church, within a span of five days, 45-year-old Geeta Narasimha 
Chari was seriously injured when a large boulder came crashing down on two 
residential housed on June 20 morning. A boulder weighing about 2 tonnes 
fell on the rear portion of her house. The balcony of Premnath Chari's 
house nearby collapsed too. (H)

ADDITIONAL PORTFOLIOS TODAY: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, is expected 
to allocate additional portfolios to his cabinet colleagues today, before 
leaving for Aurangabad on a tour. Mr Parrikar has thus far allocated only 
one department to each of his 12 ministers. (H)

UGDP HANKERS FOR JUICY POSTS: A few United Goans Democratic Party office 
bearers, the major coalition partner in the BJP government have evinced

NIRMALA IN DRIVER'S SEAT: The All India Congress Committee has ruled out 
any change in the presidentship of the Goa Pradesh Congress Committee. 
According to reliable sources, Sonia Gandhi reposed faith in GPCC president

DISSOLUTION PLEA HEARING: The Panaji Bench of Bombay High Court has 
directed the counsels for the applicants as well as defendants in the case 
pertaining to dissolution of State assembly by the Governor, Mr Mohammad 
Fazal, and other related petitions, to file their submissions by July 1. (NT)

CYBER-AGE STUDENT SCHEME: Although Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar had said 
in his budget speech that a cyber-age student scheme of providing computers 
to the students of standard XI would commence by September 2002, the 
Directorate of Education is still in the dark with regard to the scheme. (H)

SKELETONS TUMBLE OUT: Skeletons kept tumbling out as the Tourism Minister, 
MIccky Pacheco, conducted an inspection of the coastal villages of Benaulim 
constituency on June 20. Over a dozen projects are reported to have come up 
in the villages of Utorda, Colva and Benaulim in violation of the rules and 
regulations. The Minister asked how a starred hotel was allowed to deny 
entry to local fishermen by blocking the access by barbed fencing. (H)

TOO MANY VEHICELS IN MARGAO: A chunk of 29,400 vehicles plodding in Margo 
city between morning and afternoon hinders the smooth implementation of 
traffic regulations. "While throughout the day 260 buses enter Vasco city, 
250 buses enter Margao in one hour," stated a police officer. A study 
conducted by the Goa Police reveals that in the morning 18,408 
two-wheelers, 9,352 four-wheelers and 1,630 buses enter the city. (NT)

ZUARI PLANT CLEARED OF SEEPAGE CHARGES: M/s FACT Engineering and Design 
Organisation, a Kochi-based public sector undertaking, has ruled out any 
seepage from the effluent treatment plant of Zuari Industries Limited at 
Sancoale. The agency had been appointed by the Bombay High Court at Goa in 
consultation with Goa Foundation, which had alleged that there was a 
leakage from the pipeline from the effluent treatment plant. (GT)

ABOUT BENAULIM PRAWN HATCHERY: After much dilly dallying, the government 
has finally invited private sector participation to run Goa's pilot prawn 
hatchery located near the Benaulim seashore. Once a highly profit making 
unit, this agency, established in 1989, has been literally struggling to 
survive in the recent times. (H)

JOHNNIE WALKER IN GOA: Guinness UDV has recently introduced Johnnie Walker 
Scotch whisky in Goa. Priced in accordance with the state excise 
regulations, the range comprises of Red Label, Black Label, Pure Malt, gold

NEW POLICE OFFICER: Mr Muktesh Chander, an IPS officer on deputation is 
holding the charge of CID Goa in absence of Mr Devesh Srivastava. Before 
being posted in Goa, he was the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Prime

NEW DEADLINE FOR SIOLIM BRIDGE: Bowing to stiff public opposition over yet 
another delay in the Siolim-Chopdem bridge, PWD Minister Sudin Dhavlikar on 
June 20, announced yet another deadlinefirst week of Julyto open the bridge 
to the public. (H)

GOA IT AND E-GOVERNANCE: Struggling to push ahead with its e-governance and 
IT plans, Goa has announced additional funding for a number of initiatives. 
The major initiatives proposed include a hi-tech habitat at Dona Paula. It 
is expected 'to create employment for about 10,000 people'. The government 
recently announced that the Software Technology Park of India has shown 
interest in setting up a high speed, Rs.4.75-crore data communication in 
the hi-tech habitat. On the e-governance front, the State has proposed the 
setting up of a Wide Area Network connecting blocks to district HQ and 
State capital, and an International Institute of IT. (Frederick Noronha in

INTER-CASTE MARRIAGES: The Directorate of Social Welfare, Panjim, gives an 
award of Rs.10,000 per couple for inter-caste marriages. (H)

BALLI PHONES DEAD: A number of telephones under the Balli telephone 
exchange in Quepem have gone dead since the last five days. (NT)

SONIA FERNANDES STABBED, SAFE: Sonia Fernandes, 27,fleeing from a crazed 
knifeman, was stabbed on the doorstep of the police station in Bishop 
Stortford, Hertfordshire,after finding it was closed at around 7pm on 16 
May.She ended up being saved by hairdresser Ian Reijs, who leapt on to the 
knifeman's back, toppling him. She spent two weeks in hospital. A 
29-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder. ("Eddie Fernandes"
