(Edit in Herald) > Did Konkani suffer neglect only during the Portuguese colonial rule, Mr. Editor of Herald? Did our 'avoi-bhas' benefit from any support from the Kadamba or Silahara dynasties or from the Adil Shahs? Or, for that matter, have any Goa authorities after December 19, 1961 done anything in favour of our language, barring the Legislative Assembly's Official Language Act of February 4, 1987? Ironically, it was one Portuguese Secretary-General of the Government of the erstwhile 'Estado da India', Joaquim Heliodoro da Cunha Rivara, who, though not knowing Konkani, rendered the language a yeoman service by unearthing and publishing some manuscripts which might otherwise have been lost forever, and what he did and wrote inspired such great figures of Konkani Language and Literature as Vaman Varde Valaulikar (Shennoy Goembab) and Mgr. Sebastiao Rodolfo Dalgado. Let's be honest and give due merit to those who deserve it.
