Subject: [Goanet] Little Flower of Jesus HS, Calangute SSCE results
Calangute schools - results of SSCE Board exams held in April 2002
Master Dominic Savio Pereira of Little Flower of Jesus High School, secured 90.40
percent marks in the SSCE exams to rank first among all the schools of Calangute
constituency, according to the school management.
The Gauravaddo lad, has now joined St Xavier' college, Mapusa, in Science stream and
later, plans on doing Computer Engineering according to his mother, Ms Mathildes
Pereira who is also a teacher at the Little Flower Of Jesus H. S. Calangute. His
father, Mr Nicholas Pereira is a manager in the State Bank of India.
On the whole, Little Flower HS did well. Their overall pass percentage is 76.42
percent. They fielded 72 students of whom 3 got distinctions, 3 got first classes, 19
got second classes, 30 pass class, 1 ATKT (allowed to keep terms) and 16 failed.
Besides, Master Dominic Savio, the others who obtained distinctions are; Master
Richard Pinto from Escrivao Vaddo, Candolim (86.80 percent) and Ms Nanda Dharwadkar
from Naikavaddo (79.46 percent).
The 3 first class students are Ms Pranjali Bandodkar, Escrivao Vaddo, Candolim, Ms
Marriane D'souza, Gauravaddo and Ms Darshana Nasnodkar, Porbavaddo.
All very well but there is still a little bitter after taste in the mouth. What went
wrong for the 16 students who failed? How and why did they fail? The headmistress,
Sister Perpetua was on leave. Perhaps she can throw some light on this when she comes
back.
Meanwhile, all the best to the successful students in their future endeavours;
scholastic or otherwise.

Subject: [Goanet] The original 'Wake up and smell the coffee"
Renowned agony aunt Ann Landers dies at 83
CHICAGO -- Reputed to be the world's most widely read columnist, agony aunt
Ann Landers, who famously urged her readers to "wake up and smell the
coffee", has died at the age of 83.
The Chicago Tribune, which had been her home base since 1987, said she died
in her Chicago home on Saturday of multiple myeloma - a bone marrow tumor.
Her real name was Esther "Eppie" Pauline Friedman Lederer, and according to
the Tribune her column was for 40 years the world's best read and most
widely syndicated - carried by 1,200 newspapers.
"Wake up and smell the coffee" may have been the most famous of her
one-liners. It was also the title of one of her books, and set the tone for
decades of no-nonsense advice giving.
Landers reinvented the newspaper advice column with a saucy and succinct wit.
Dispensing guidance that ranged from the practical to the expert, and
covering topics from sex to religion, her column reached an estimated 90
million people daily.
Landers, along with twin sister Pauline Phillips writing as Abigail Van
Buren under the "Dear Abby" title, dominated the advice-giving genre in US
newspapers during most of the last half of the 20th century. She tackled
issues ranging from cancer research to Aids and gun control, using as a
springboard letters from readers which flooded her office by the thousands.
She was said to have spent up to 14 hours a day reading her mail.
Landers, born in Sioux City, Iowa, on July 4, 1918, started delivering her
daily doses of guidance in 1955 when she took over the Ann Landers column
in the Chicago Sun-Times newspaper. In 1987, her column moved to the
Chicago Tribune syndicate.
She once said in an interview that she contacted an executive she knew at
the then parent company of the Sun-Times, offering to help with the Ann
Landers column, saying her answers were better than those in print. It
turned out the column's author had died and the paper needed a replacement.

Subject: [Goanet] LINK: Some Goa-related websites... others from beyond
Lynn Mario Barreto LYNN BARRETO MIRANDA <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> is a
webdesigner from Margao. When we met some days back, I asked him for
links to some of the websites he has been putting out recently.
Kindly check out some of his Goa-related websites:
www.lesagoa.com (Loyola's alumni, Margao)
www.shyamsundargoa.com (a pro photo studio's site)
www.vascoclub.com (the football club)
ancestralgoa.8m.com or ancestralgoa.com (Ancestral Goa)
Incidentally, over the past two days, I spent time at a field trip to
Sawantwadi. Below are some sites which I ran into while in the
region:
www.sawantwadi.com
www.malvanimasala.com
www.kokan.com
www.sindhudurg.com
Sindhudurg is the southernmost of Maharashtra's coastal districts, a green
and (fairly) underpopulated place which has long looked to out-migration
to Mumbai and elsewhere. It also reminds one of Goa somewhat, though the
fish is IMHO, far better and the "Malvani" cuisine has a charm of its own.

Subject: goanese or goesa
[Goanese is an English term, used by the Linguistic
Survey of India, to begin with and perpetuated later
by other linguists and journalists.
Portuguese could not have used an English term, could
they?
If ever, they could have used the term "goesa" from
Goa. The spelling of goem is from them for Goa and it
stands for Konkani goy (vhoddlem goy, saibachem goy,
novem goy)with the nasal placed on "go".
There we go, again,
With warm regards,
William]

[Definitely not. What nonsense. "Goanese" is not
Portuguese ! So how could it have been used by the
Portuguese ??
In Portuguese the word for Goans is: "Goeses" (plural)
and "Goes" (singular).
Best regards,

Navhind Times on Line
Margao Bureau
KBM lauds decision to observe Goembab's birth anniversary
MARGAO, June 27: The Konkani Bhasha Mandal (KBM) president, Prof Shyam
Verenkar, has congratulated the state government and the Chief Minister, Mr
Manohar Parrikar, for their decision to observe Shenoi Goembab's 125th birth
anniversary year as Asmitai year all over the state.
"Shenoi Goembab was a visionary who instilled a sense of self respect among
the Goans by revealing to them, through research, their rich cultural
heritage and the distinct identity," says a press note released here.
Prof Verenkar expressed his displeasure over the reaction by Marathi
protagonists, which he dubbed as an attempt to give wishful twist to the
Chief Minister's statement.
"Goan identity cannot be divided as Marathi Asmitai and Konkani Asmitai,"
advocated Prof Verenkar adding Goans have always loved and served other
languages like Marathi, Hindi, English and Portuguese.
"Konkani Bhasha Mandal is proud of all Goan artistes, even Marathi writers
who have excelled in their respective fields," said KBM chief. He said poet
B B Borkar's or story teller Laxmanrao Sardesai's love for Marathi never
came in the way of their regard towards mother tongue, Konkani.
KBM has appealed to the Marathi lovers to give up their designs of dividing
the people through misinformation campaign. "We wish that all Marathi lovers
too participate in the Shenoi Goembab's anniversary celebrations and spread
the message of holding Goan identity in high esteem," the press note added.

Standing for what you believe in,
Regardless of the odds against you,
and the pressure that tears at your resistance,

Keeping a smile on your face,
When inside you feel like dying,
For the sake of supporting others,

Stopping at nothing,
And doing what's in your heart,
You know is right,
... means determination.
Doing more than is expected,
To make another's life a little more bearable,
Without uttering a single complaint,
... means compassion.
Helping a friend in need,
No matter the time or effort,
To the best of your ability,

Giving more than you have,
And expecting nothing,
But nothing in return,

Subject: [Goanet] MISUSE OF PUBLIC FUNDS
The recent order by the Panaji Bench of the Bombay High Court directing
the Goa Government to list the steps it proposes to take to curb
unnecessary waste of public funds is commendable.
It is a shame that the Judiciary had to intervene in a matter that should
have been a concern of our legislators, that is if they have a conscience.
Our new PWD Minister, Mr Sudin Dhavlikar, who just two months ago was
sacked as Chairman of EDC by Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar now says that
he will review all previous tenders given by the PWD. Let us hope that the
review will not be a mere drama to ensure that the contractors put in their
kickbacks to the new incumbent after having already satisfied the greed of
the previous incumbent.
Today it is no secret that our roads are designed to have potholes. BJP
Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar had assured us that a little of the saffron
ingredient would make them more road-worthy. However, the road users have
to endure the same old story.
The Panaji Bench of the Bombay High Court was very right in directing the
Government of Goa to disclose what steps it intends to take in order to
curb the misuse of public funds. It has also called for a provision of
guidelines for the expenditure incurred by persons holding high public
offices in State-owned corporations.
Over the years and specially in recent ones, the political appointees
of various Government Corporations have been incurring excessive
expenditure. The Government has spurned with contempt the public demand
that citizens with expertise in their respective fields should head these
corporations shunting out political appointees.
The High Court was very right in expressing concern over the expenditure
incurred especially as the corporations had been incurring huge operational
losses.
The Judges were was also right in noting that the time has come to look into
this aspect of the matter as it involves public money. The judges felt that
the growing tendency to spend public funds without any accountability and
transparency by the persons holding public posts, or public offices, due to
political patronage has become the order of the day.
It is time public vehicles stop ferrying children of VIPs to schools and
the wives to the markets. Citizens of Goa might be assured of a worthy
public transport only after those in power start using the system.
Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar will have to take steps to curb unnecessary
waste of public funds. Public funds are meant to serve a public cause and
private individuals have no right to have a lick at them.
