LECTURER DIES IN MISHAP: Filomena A Rodrigues e Sales, a 45-year-old
lecturer at Goa Engineering College in Farmagudi and hailing from Benaulim,
was killed in a road mishap at Borim on June 28 afternoon. She was driving
in her Maruti car from Margao to Ponda when the vehicle swerved to the
wrong side of the road and dashed against a retaining wall. Filomena died
on the spot. (H)
GOA MINISTERS TO MEET VAJPAYEE: During a two-day visit to New Delhi, all
the Cabinet ministers led by Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, will meet the
Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee and apprise him about the good
governance, which the Parrikar governments intends to deliver to its

CHIEF MINISTER'S SURPRISE VISIT: The Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar,
paid a surprise visit to the information and publicity department
yesterday. Mr Parrikar personally went to every section of the department
and acquainted himself with their working and requirements. (NT)
MHADEI ISSUE: The Mhadei Bachao Abhiyan appealed to the State government to
lead an all-party delegation to Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee in
order to restrain the Karnataka government from diverting Mhadei waters
into the Malaprabha basin in Karnataka. (GT)
SRIPAD OR ANGLE? Will it Sripad Naik again or his South Goa counterpart,
Ramakant Angle, is a question being deliberated in BJP circles following
the announcement of the expansion of the Union Cabinet on July 1. Naik
appears confident of again finding a berth in the ministry after a month's

MICKKY VOWS: Tourism minister Mickky Pacheco has said he will see that his
bitter rival, Churchill Alemao, is defeated in future elections, no matter
in which part of Goa the former MLA stands as a candidate. (H)
YOUTH TO WARD OFF THIEVES IN PONDA? In a move to involve the general public
to combat dacoities and robberies, which are on the rise in the State, the
Ponda police has asked the panchayats to recommend at least five youths
from each ward to keep a night vigil. (GT)
TO CURB ROBBERIES: Besides promising to improve policing as part of their
plan to curb robberies in South Goa, the police have suggested to
industrial houses to prepare computerized data on their employees both
permanent and temporary. The lists are then to be submitted to the
concerned police stations to verify the antecedents of these workers. They
have also asked industrialists to fill up a strangers' roll form, which
will facilitate investigations. (NT)
ADDITIONAL MBBS SEATS: Health Minister, Dr Suresh Amonkar, yesterday stated
that the 30 additional seats for the first year MMBS course at the GMC
would be available only after the visit of the Medical Council of India's
inspection team scheduled for August 13 and 14. (H)
EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES: The State government has decided to set up
Medical Emergency Services units on the lines of the Trauma unit at the
three major government hospitals. (GT)
DOG BITE CASES SHOOT UP: Cases of dog bites have reached alarming
proportions in Valpoi. Besides the 15 persons inflicted with dog bites last
week, four staff membersincluding a doctor and two nursesat the Valpoi
Community Health Centre have also come in contact with the infection. (H)
COUNTERMANDING CASES: About 16 more witnesses remain to be examined in the
infamous 1989 countermanding of elections conspiracy case, which has been
dragging on for the last 12 years. (H)
NIGHT SOIL OFFLOADING AT SERAULIM: Now that the Margao Municipal Council
has claimed that it has stopped offloading the night soil at Sonsodo, the
civic body now insists that the night soil is offloaded at a private farm
at Seraulim, with the prior approval of the farm owner. (H)
DOWRY HARASSMENT CASE: The JMFC, Panjim, has convicted Dhananjay Naik of
Curca and three of his family members of dowry harassment of his wife Milan
Naik, which caused her to try to end her life. (H)
CENTRE FOR FILM-MAKER'S PORTUGUESE TRIANGLE: A Kolkata-based film-maker is
bringing together the missing links that would allow him to create an
ambitious project involving three continents and looking at cultures still
feeling the influence of the Portuguese, centuries later. Goa, where the
influences of the sixteenth to mid-twentieth centuries are not adequately
studied currently, is centre to the story of film-maker Indranil

KONKANI BHASHA MANDAL MEET: The annual general body meeting of the Konkani
Bhasha Mandal will be held on June 30 at 10.30 at the Konkani Bhavan in

FEAST OF STS PETER AND PAUL: Today the feast of Saints Peter and Paul is
celebrated in Goa. Like the feast of Sao Joao, this feast too is a monsoon
event and in Orda in Candolim, it is celebrated with the popular "Sangodd".
It is a platform of three boats tied together on which a performance of
song and drama is held. It is a delightful visual to see the "sangoodd"
being rowed to half-a-dozen destinations along the river bank, at each
place a large crowd gathers to see it. Candolim used to hold the "Sangodd"
at least at three places, of these only Orda carries on the tradition still.
