JAIN TV amplifies "Voice of Christianity"

By J. John

It's been a long time wish of JAIN TV to start a programme on
Christianity, on line with another programme it telecasts on the channel
for Muslims. Two years ago Jain TV had contacted Fr. Dominic Emmanuel
svd, to discuss the possibilities of running such a program on JAIN
TV. Several meetings were held, but due to lack of programmes and lack of
ideas with regard to the contents and format of the programme as well as
problem of funding and other reasons, it was put on hold. It thus
remained hanging in the air.

All of a sudden, Fr. Dominic Emmanuel was contacted by JAIN TV to
announce that they had already prepared a promo-ad for a programme
called, 'Voice of Christianity' or 'Isa ke log' to be launched
shortly. Mr. Joys Sebastian, one of the main persons behind executing the
idea of the programme and also the producer of the programme contacted
Fr. Emmanuel to get a response to his promo-ad. The JAIN TV President and
owner Dr. J.K. Jain then expressed his desire to meet the archbishop of
Delhi, Archbishop Vincent M. Concessao to get his blessings before
launching the programme.

Finally the blessed day to launch the first episode of 'Voice of
Christianity'. Actually this was an inspiration of the programme on
Muslims called Muslim Kal Aaj aur Kal, which is already being telecast on
Jain TV for last year and a half.

JAIN TV has created a platform for the Christians to raise their concern
and problems to help them share their views to people of other
Communities in India. This is a great opportunity for the Christians to
have a voice, though limited, through the electronic media. It will also
help Christians to make their point of view known and heard.

It has fallen on Fr. Dominic Emmanuel svd to be the presenter (anchor
person) of the programme. He also has the onerous task of single-handedly
coordinating the show, having to plan and arrange for the panelists
according to the topic chosen by him for discussion as well as doing the
necessary research to formulate discussion questions.

On June 16, 2002 the pilot episode was telecast. The panels of speakers
for the discussion were Archbishop of Delhi Vincent M. Concessao, Bishop
Karam Masih of CNI and Fr. George Tharayil, Principal of Don Bosco in
Delhi. The discussion was on the conditions of Christian minorities in
India.

One cannot forget horrendous incidents that have taken place in Gujarat
and are still continuing in the name of religion. So the second episode
that went on air was a discussion on Gujarat carnage and Christianity
which was telecast on 23 June 2002. The distinguished speakers like
Fr.Cedric Prakash, Director of Prashant, Ahmedabad, Mrs. Jyotsna
Chatterjee of Joint women's Programme, and Mr. Joseph Gathia, Director of
Centre for Concern for Child Labour were on the panel which was again
moderated by Fr. Dominic Emmanuel svd.

The next two episodes will be devoted to discussions on the Health Care
Apostolate of the Church and its contributions. In the 3rd Episode the
panel consisted of Rev. Dr. Alex Vadakumthala, the executive secretary of
the Health Commission of the CBCI, Sr. Sabita of the Missionaries of
Charity and Dr. Vinod Shah, Executive Director of Emmanuel Hospitals
Association which and is to be telecast on 30th June.

Due to the immensely positive response received by JAIN TV from all parts
of the country, they have decided to repeat the Sunday episode on
Wednesdays at 8.30 am and on Fridays at 5.00 pm. These programmes promise
to give more representation to Christian news and views to the secular
world.

This is only a small effort and though one knows that not many people may
be watching JAIN TV, it is certainly a start, even though a small
one. But let us remember that all great things have a humble
beginning. The efforts of JAIN TV and the coordinating attempts of
Fr. Dominic in undertaking this endeavor must be lauded.
