GOA MAY PULL OUT OF TILLARI: The State government is faced with the
question as to whether to continue investing in the Tillari Irrigation
Project or to divert the funds to other projects with tourism potential
which is the backbone of Goan economy. Speaking to reporters yesterday,
Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar stressed that the need to re-think over the
Tillari project was felt since it will ultimately turn out to be a white
elephant. The government has already contributed Rs.280 crore towards the
project which was estimated to cost Rs.800 crore in the year 1988-89. (GT)
SRIPAD'S PRIORITIES FOR GOA: "I want to speed up the process of the
proposed Mopa airport in Pernem taluka, besides ensuring improvement at the
Vasco airport. I will also make efforts to start a direct flight between
New Delhi and Goa," said Sripad Naik�When the re-shuffling of the Union

CHOPDEM-SIOLIM BRIDGE OPENING ON JULY 4: After overcoming numerous hurdles,
the people of Pernem achieved two ambitious projectsKonkan Railway's Pernem
station and Colvale Bridge on National Highway 17. The third ambitious
project of Chopdem-Siolim bridge has reached the completion after dragging
its feet for a decade. The government has declared that the bridge would be
made functional on July 4. This will bring much relief to the people of
entire Pernem taluka as well as Bardez and Sindudurgh district. (NT)
BAN ON USE OF PLASTIC BAGS: As the ban on use of plastic carry bags upto 40
microns came into force yesterday, the North Goa District administration
formed squads to conduct raids and seize carry bags, which do not conform
to the norms. (H)
GOVT LEAVES PVT WORKERS HIGH AND DRY: A large section of employees from the
private sector stands neglected mainly due to the failure of the government
to revise the minimum wage scale for the past four years, stated
Association of Indian Trade Union Congress president Narayan Palekar. (GT)
PARRIKAR DENIES: Chief Minister Parrikar yesterday denied having made any
statement announcing year-long propagation of Konkani in schools at the
function to commemorate Shenoi Goembab's anniversary recently. He clarified
that he had stated that the real Goan culture (asmitai and not Konkani
asmitai) would be propagated right up to the primar5y school levels. (H)
CAN TALEIGAO GET BACK PANCHAYAT STATUS? Taleigao MLA Atanasio alias Babush
Monserrate, who is now the minister for Town and Country Planning, had
promised in his election manifesto that Taleigao would be reverted to
village panchayat status. Asked whether this can be done, the chief
minister said "ultimately, it has to be approved from the legal point of

"NATURAL FAMILY PLANNING": Little-noticed by most, Goa's Catholic Church is
contributing to this state's declining population growth. It's doing so by
imparting teaching to all of its flock getting married about "natural

going by the situation. But not for the real estate sharks and builders, so

CUNCOLIM'S STRAY DOG PROBLEM: It's now nearly half a decade since the
Cuncolim Municipal Council discontinued the services of a hired dog
shooter. While this implied that the municipality did not kill a dog since
then, the civic body failed to sterilize the strays, resulting in a sharp
increase in the population of dogs. (H)
FAZAL COMPLETES 80: Governor Mohammed Fazal completed 80 years today (July
2), which is also the wedding anniversary of the governor and Tasneen

"IN FAVOUR OF MOONLIGHT PARTIES": "I do not know much about the state of
affairs of agriculture in the State," is the honest affirmation of the
Agriculture minister Dayanand Mandrekar. Contrary to public perception that
Anjuna-Vagator belt is ravished by free drug trade and the evil of
moonlight parties, Mandrekar emphatically claims that he is all in favour
of moonlight parties as it provides succour to the villagers. (H)
MALARIA CASES IN CANACONA: The Canacona Community Health Centre has so far
recorded as many as 33 malaria cases this year. The Health Officer
mentioned that 95 per cent of the cases reported this year are from the
migrant labour community. (H)
FOUND IN A GUNNY BAG: Mystery shrouds the death of a youth, whose body was
found in a gunny bag at an isolated place at Suktolim in the forest at
Collem on June 29. The police recovered some bones and the skull besides a
gunny bag containing nails and trimmed hair. (NT)

maiden July issue of new monthly magazine "Build Arena" yesterday. The
magazine would cater to the readers in Goa, Maharashtra and Karnataka and
it would provide content that would be of use for individuals from
professions in business, industry and infrastructure sector. The board of
advisors comprises of Arch Cho Padamsee, Fr Romuald D'Souza, Arch Rita Mody
Joshi, Engr Amin Ladak and Engr Madhav Kamat. (GT)
