MARGAO SEWERAGE PROJECT WILL COST 19 TIMES MORE: A near 2000 per cent or 19 
times rise in the original cost of any infrastructure project is indeed 
surprising, if not mind-boggling. This is exactly the case with the 
long-delayed Margao sewerage project. Initially estimated to cost just 
Rs.2.80 crore in mid-80's, the cost overruns after a long delay of 17 
years, are now pegged at Rs.53 crore. (H)

SIOLIM-CHOPDEM BRIDGE INAUGURATION TODAY: The Siolim-Chopdem bridge will be 
thrown open for vehicular traffic from tomorrow. It will link Pernem taluka 
with the 'main-land' and thus boost tourism and trade in the otherwise 
neglected areas of Pernem taluka. The Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar, 
will inaugurate the bridge for public in presence of three legislators from

FISHING ACTIVITY CONTINUES DESPITE BAN: Despite the ban on fishing in Goa 
coming into force from June 7, it appears that fishing activity continues 
unabated in the state. Fresh mackerel, sardine, prawns and other fish was 
openly being sold in the Mapusa market and other markets of the coastal 
villages of Bardez even today evening. A fisherwoman described the mackerel 
as "maganche," a reference to the breeding season. (nt)

VISION DOCUMENTS FOR NEXT 10 YEARS: The BJP-led coalition government 
promises to give better governance in its second term. Chief Minister 
Manohar Parrikar claims that a vision document for the next ten years is in

ROW IN ASSOLNA OVER PRE-PRIMARY SCHOOL: The decision to shift pre-primary 
classes of Regina Martyrum High School has kicked up a furore in Assolna, 
Salcete. Parents and guardians of 60 toddlers yesterday refused to send 
their wards to the new classrooms and have given Principal Fr Francis 
D'Mello one day to work out a solution. According to Fr D'Mello, the old 
premises will be leased out for commercial purpose, which will earn some 
rent, adding that the decision was taken in consultation with the Fabrica

regular water supply uninterrupted power supply and roads. The second is 
proper planning. Much of the development has been done by the people 
themselves�Development of an area should not be considered as a favour on 
the people. It should be treated as a routine matter. Besides, steps should 
be taken to inculcate certain values in public and development should be

MHADEI DIVERSION WILL BRING DISASTER: Former Union minister, Mr Ramakant 
Khalap, has urged the Prime Minister, Mr AB Vajpayee, to intervene in 
Mhadei river dispute. Mr Khalap argued that diversion of the Mhadei waters 
would bring disaster to the State and its people. (NT)

meeting of all its members and environmentalists at the Gomantak Sahitya

RANE URGES GOVT: Expressing serious concern over the alarming number of dog 
bite cases in the Sattari Taluka, Opposition leader Pratapsing Rane has 
insisted that the government should initiate immediate steps to end the dog 
menace in the taluka. (H)

ALL-WOMEN'S ITI: An all women's Industrial Training Institute, the first of 
its kind in the State, will set up in a couple of years time at Porvorim,

PM ASSURES OF PROBE INTO MHADEI DIVERSION: The Prime Minister, Mr Atal 
Behari Vajpayee today assured Goa cabinet that he would order an inquiry 
into the Central Water Commission (CWC) action of granting temporary 
permission to Karnataka to divert the Mhadei river water without consulting 
Goa and Maharashtra. The assurance was given when the Chief Minister, Mr 
Manohar Parrikar along with his cabinet colleagues called on the Prime

WOMAN STABBED: A stabbing case was reported at the Panjim town police 
station. Police sources informed that the accused Anton Figueredo stabbed 
Maria Vaz yesterday afternoon. The assault could have resulted out of

HELD FOR SMUGGLING OF SANDALWOOD: Naguesh V Mastai of Udupi, Karnataka, has 
been arrested by the Canacona police for illegally possessing four kg of 
smuggled sandalwood near the sandalwood oil factory at Dumanem-Canacona. (H)

UNITED STATES CITIZEN FOUND DEAD: The Colva police have recovered the body 
of a foreigner (Ronald Carl Brown) hanging in a rented flat at Per-Seraulim

MISHAP HALTS TRAFFIC ON RIBANDAR PATTO: An early morning road mishap at 
Ribandar Patto halted vehicular traffic for almost half an hour today. A 
truck from Mumbai with registration number GJ-12-W 6668 loaded with wooden 
articles and proceeding to Old Goa rammed into a Panaji bound mini bus, 
GA-01-T 2219 damaging its front portion at around 8 in the morning.

has said the urgency and haste with which an age old club house belonging 
to Betalbatim Sports Club was demolished by the government goes to prove
