Dear Friends,

First of all, I request the administration groups of the various addressee
d-lists not to take this post of mine as a cross-posting. The reason why I
am sending it to all the above four d-lists (of which I am a member) is that
I wish to include in my query as many persons as possible.

Now my question. Over the last few days we have seen several references to
"Asmitai", in connection with the on-going year-long celebrations in Goa to
mark the 125th birth anniversary of Vaman Ragunath Shennoy Varde Valaulikar
(Shennoy Goembab), and the term has been presented as meaning now "culture"
and now "identity". I have three dictionaries: one, Konkani/Portuguese;
another, Konkani/English; and the third, Konkani/Portuguese/English, and in
none of them I found the word "Asmitai". Gurunath Kelekar, in his
English/Konkani Dictionary, has "culture" as meaning "sanskrutai" and
"sobhiotai" in Konkani, and "identity" as "vollok", "khaxelkai",
"kheriponn", etc. I would therefore be grateful if the Konkani scholars
would kindly elucidate: (a) if "Asmitai" is a genuine Konkani vocable, and
(b) what is its real meaning: "culture" or "identity".
