PACHECO IN HIGH DRAMA ON ROAD: Tourism Minster Mickky Pacheco has been
accused of assaulting a Kadamba Transport Corporation Limited bus driver
after his car, a Mitsubishi Lancer, was rammed by the bus near Panaji. The
incident created an uproar in the Assembly when the matter was raised by
Cuncolim MLA Joaquim Alemao. However, Speaker Vishwas Satarkar turned down
the Opposition demand for a discussion. (GT)

MICKKY TRIED TO CORRECT "RASH DRIVER": The Tourism Minister, Mickky
Pacheco, also likes to correct bus drivers indulging in rash and negligent
driving, so it seems. And this is what he tried to do on Friday morning
which led to an accident 100 metres away from the Panjim KTC bus terminus,
if the Transport Minster, Pandurang Madkaikar, is to be believed. (H)

ROW OVER ALLEGED ASSAULT: The employees of Kadamba Transport Corporation
have threatened a flash agitation if the police failed to take action
against Mr Francisco Xavier Pacheco, the Tourism Minister, and his driver
for allegedly assaulting the driver of a KTC bus, which was involved in an
accident on July 26 with the minister's car. (NT)

COAST GUARD SEIZES FIVE MORE TRAWLERS: The Goa Coast Guard yesterday
intercepted and seized five more trawlers near the MPT jetty, as part of
the continued efforts to prevent the mechanised boats from defying the High
Court ban, by fishing in the Arabian sea during the prohibition period.
However, four motorized canoes (from Vasco) managed to escape from the
clutches of the Coast Guard. (H)

PORVORIM TO GET MUNICIPALITY: Replying to resolution by Bicholim MLA Rajesh
Patnekar that the address of the Secretariat complex be read as
"Panaji-Goa" instead of "Porvorim-Goa", Urban Development Minister Digamber
Kamat stated on July 26 that either a new municipal council will be created
at Porvorim or the limits of the Panaji Municipal Council will be expanded
in view of the Assembly complex and proposed new Secretariat there. (GT)

REPAIRS TO KHAZAN BUNDHS: Santa Cruz MLA Victoria Fernandes succeeded in
getting concrete assurances from the government during the Question Hour in
the Assembly yesterday pertaining to repair of Khazan bundhs and amendment
to Goa Fruit and Ornamental Plant Nurseries Act 1977. (GT)

ILLEGAL NURSERIES: The State Government is proposing to amend the Goa Fruit
and Commercial Nurseries Act 1997 to empower zonal officers of the
Agriculture Department to take action against sale of planting material by
unauthorized nurseries. (H)

RESIDENTS' "NO" TO BENDOREM GARBAGE SITE: Opposition seems to be brewing
among the local residents of Balli village to the proposed selection of
Bendorem as the likely garbage dumping ground for the South Goa district. (H)

FOUR LIVES IN 10 DAYS: The Marcaim constituency has been left grieving over
the tragic loss of four young lives within a span of 10 days. The chain
began with the demise of Tanuja Naik (24) of Parampai Marcaim, when she was
shot dead on July 15. After barely getting over the death of Tanuja,
residents heard the gloomy news of the death of Harish Rama Naik (24), a
shipbuilding technology graduate, who is believed to have accidentally
fallen into a well and drowned. Akshata Uday Prabhu of Kavale decided to
end her life, frustrated after her result was declared in the "reserved"
category. And on July 24, Anil Atmaram Naik, who suffered from food
poisoning, died at the Nanavati hospital in Mumbai. (H)

PROPERTY WORTH RS.90,000 STOLEN: Cash and property worth Rs.90,000 was
stolen from the office of Itochi Enterprises in Vasco. (H)

DGP SUFFERS STROKE: The Director General of Police, Gurucharan Singh
Sandhu, suffered a stroke at the Police Head Quarters yesterday. (H)

KARNATAKA, GOA CMS CALL ON PM: Chief Ministers of Karnataka and Goa called
on Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on Friday in connection with the
issue of the proposed diversion of water from the Madei basin. (UNI report

AIR, DD WORKERS DHARNA: The engineering employees working at All India
Radio and Doordarshan in Goa staged a "sit-in-dharna" on Friday at AIR,
Panjim, HPT, Bambolim, and Doordarshan Kendra, Panaji, to protest against
the anti-employees policies being resorted to by the Central government and
the Prasar Bharati Board. (H)

DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS FOR MAPUSA: In a meeting held yesterday at the Mapusa
Municipal Council, a 17-member committee was nominated to identify
development and beautification projects for Mapusa town. These projects
will utilize the Rs.3.5 crore sanctioned to the MMC by the Ministry of

TRAINING FOR TOURIST TAXI DRIVERS: The Department of Tourism has invited
around 500 tourist taxi drivers for imparting training on statutory and
technical aspects, how to interact with tourist, customer service, at Hotel
Nanutel, Margao, from July 29-30, as part of tourism awareness. (H)

CITIZENS FEAR BLOCKED DRAINS: The shrubs and wild vegetation growing in the
drains along the DB Bandodkar Road in Panjim has caused concern among the
public. Residents fear that stagnation of water due to the plants in the
drains could result in an increase in case of malaria in the area. (NT)

FREE TRAVEL FOR WORLD WAR VETERANS: The Government of Goa has provided free
travel to the World War II Veterans, handicapped/disabled ex-servicemen and
widows in Kadamba Transport Corporation buses within the State of Goa. (NT)

NON-INCLUSION OF CPI: The Goa council of the Communist Party of India has
sought an apology of the Chief Minister, Manohar Parrikar, for excluding it
from the all-party delegation which proceeded to New Delhi to represent the
people of Goa against the Karnataka government's move to divert the waters
of the Mhadei river. CPI state secretary Christopher Fonseca strongly
condemned the non-including of the party in the delegation. (GT)

ROADSIDE EUCHARIST CELEBRATIONS: Senior clergymen have lamented that the
Holy Eucharist were being celebrated at roadside crosses in Goa in spite of

produce a short film on Shenoi Goembab alias Vaman Raghunath Varde

into the quarter finals of the Varca Panchayat Cup. Navelim Sporting Club
carved a 2-1 victory over Guirdolim Sports Club to advance in the CRC Cup
soccer tournament. Sao Jose de Areal downed Maina Sports Club 2-0 to sail
into the quarters of the Brunie & Brunet soccer tournament at Curtorim. FC
Siolim thrashed PVC Parra 8-0 o move into quarter finals of the Vagator
soccer tournament. Youth of Taleigao scored a facile 2-0 win over Merces
Boys to enter the finals of the all Goa Directors Special soccer tournament
