Fifty years on, those of us old enough to remember will recall
one of the most shameful periods of recent American political history,
which saw the rise of the late Senator Joe McCarthy and his Un-American
Activities Committee. Taking advantage of the anti-communist hysteria
then prevailing, this die-hard right-wing Republican bigot launched a
viscious attack on all liberal intellectuals, particularly those in the
entertainment field in Holywood. The lives of gifted artists such as
actor James Garner and director Stanley Kubrik were ruined and many
were actually driven to suicide! He made a mockery of the American
liberal tradition and its constitutional provisions.
It is no wonder therefore that today President Bush and his
team of the same die-hard right-wing Republicans are taking advantage
of the prevailing anti-terorism sentiment in the U.S.A. to strike at
perceived threats throughout the world risking a worldwide conflagration,
ostensibly against terrorism but actually to protect and promote their
own narrow commercial and economic interests. The pattern repeats itself!
