ADDL PORTFOLIOS LIKELY: The Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar, is likely
to allocate additional portfolios to his cabinet colleagues today, after

PROFITS IN HYBRIDS: Farmers in different parts of Goa who had grown hybrid
rice varieties on an experimental basis are upbeat about higher yields with
lesser inputs and labour costs. It was a big risk for some of them to
purchase the costly and untried seed at Rs.85 per kgthe more tested and
trusted Jaya and Jyoti just Rs.7 per kg at subsidized ratesand co-farmers

NO SURGEON: The Veterinary Hospital of the Directorate of Animal Husbandry
and Veterinary Services at Tonca is functioning without a qualified
veterinary surgeon after an experienced hand has been transferred to

REVISION OF VOTERS ROLLS: The Congress is activating its members,
particularly those higher-up in its hierarchy, to be vigilant and play an
active role during the Election Commission's exercise for a special

SUICIDE AT SADA: One Janardhan Sherlekar, aged 35, of Sada-Vasco, committed
suicide yesterday evening by drowning himself into the river. (GT)
BOY DIES IN MISHAP: Vikram Bhandari, a 21-year-old boy from Taleigao, was
killed instantly when he was knocked down from his scooty by a speeding bus
at the Custom's House junction, in Panjim, yesterday morning. (GT)
TV AFFECTING KIDS: In her key-note address on the occasion of a programme
organised to commemorate "World Mental Health Day", Ms Kalpana Joshi of
Sangath Society for Child Development and Family Guidance, Porvorim,
observed that television programmes were playing a major role in disturbing
the mental health of children and adolescents. (NT)
GRAM SEVAKS: To fill the void, the Gram Sevaks will be trained and promoted
as village panchayat secretaries. This was disclosed by the Director of
Panchayats, Mr PM Borkar. (NT)
FONTAINHAS FESTIVAL: The architecturally rich precincts of Fontainhas with
its unique houses will be transformed into a living museum to showcase art
and heritage during a two-week long festival early next year. Organised by
the Goa Heritage Action Group, the Fontainhas Festival of Arts is scheduled
from 24 January to 10 February, 2003, and will see the opening up of at
least 15 houses in the area which will be used as art galleries and will
play host to a variety of artisans and performers. (GT)
