HAVEN FOR CRIMINALS: What's common between Davorlim, Sirvodem, Monte Hill, Housing Board areas of Margao. For an ordinary man, the very names suggest these areas are heavily inhabited by migrants. Ask the police to describe these densely populated areas and apt comes the answer that they constitute the probable sanctuaries for thieves and outstation criminal elements. (H)

CASH, GOLD STOLEN: Two persons effected entry into a hotel room at Bogmalo and robbed cash and gold ornaments from Kuldeep Singh and his wife, who were occupying at the hotel room. Another room of the hotel was occupied by the alleged accused, according to information available from the police. (NT)

11 LIVES LOST IN A MONTH: If Goan roads have become unsafe with the growing bus mishaps, they are now turning into death traps with the movement of trucks. In the 15 truck mishaps were caused due to collision, while two other mishaps took place when the truck skidded. Of the 27 vehicles involved in the mishaps, trucks account for a whopping 20 vehicles. BSNL'S MOBILES ON WEDNESDAY: The Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited is all poised to launch its cellular services in the State in Panjim from 23 October, following the countrywide launch at the hands of Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee at Lucknow on Saturday. (GT)

HIGH VOLTAGE DAMAGES IN CUNCOLIM: TVs, refrigerators and other household electrical appliances were destroyed in the wake of a sudden high voltage in some parts of Cuncolim on Sunday morning. (H)

IMPROPER TRAFFIC SIGNBOARDS: Due to the carelessness of the concerned department, a tourist family from Pune had to pay a hefty fine for over-speeding on the Colvale bridge. Mr Rajesh Jain has complained to the traffic police that the speed limited signboard was overshadowed by trees planted by the Forest department. The other signboard erected on the bridge was about 20 feet tall and could be noted only by the truck drivers. (NT)

LAWYERS DEFER STRIKE: The Vasco Advocates Association has deferred its agitation and hunger strike scheduled for October 21, at Vasco Court, upon request of the District and Session Judge, South Goa, at Margao. (H)

MURKUNDE'S FELICITATION: Ms Deepa Murkunde, who made news a few months a go in a rather bizarre fashion, by urinating in a public office in Margao, protesting against dearth of civic amenities, will be felicitated at the Gomantak Sahitya Sevak Hall, Menezes Building Panjim by the Goa People's Forum on October 22 at 5.30 pm.

TOSAZOR SPRING: A perennial source of water, the Tosazor spring, was well maintained during the Portuguese regime but neglected in the post-Liberation period. The social workers of Siddhi Samadhi Yoga, a spiritual organsiation, thought about the medicinal spring and initiated its cleaning way back in 1998.
