ROW OVER CHANGE TO COLVA CHURCH: The 367-year-old church of Our Lady of Merces at Colva wears a new look with a new RCC shade, in preparation for the traditional "Fama" on Monday. Some villagers say the parish is growing and the faithful attending the service spill out of the precincts. But conservationists feel the cement intrusion to replace the asbestos sheets has disfigured the façade, which has a typical Mannerist style. (WE-GT)

MERCHANT SHIPPING: Better and enhanced utilization of merchant navy and sea transport would help the nation in not only cutting the cost of transportation but also conserve the depleting oil resources, said Mr DT Joseph, the director general of shipping and secretary to Government of India, while addressing a gathering of the captains of the shipping industry on the occasion of launch of Confederation of Indian Maritime Industries and Associates. SURVEILLANCE NEAR CHURCHES: Following communal violence in Sholapur in Maharashtra on Friday, the Goa Police have stepped up surveillance near religious structures, especially churches. "PLAN HALF-BAKED": Mr CV Dhume, the former chief Inspector of Factories and Boilers, described the Off Site Emergency Management Plan of the State government as half-baked and observed that the plan being a public document should be widely circulated among NGOs, local self-government bodies for their comments and involvement. The State government plan launched on October 3, envisages the handling of man-made and natural disasters occurring at public places. (NT)

OZRANT RAVE PARTY: The season's first rave party, held in Vagator, last week, was stopped by the Goa Police control van patrolling in the area at about 1.15 am. ASSAGAO COMUNIDADE LAND: After clearing up the Comunidade land of all illegal structures at Assagao, the Comunidade property is now being allegedly misused for illegal excavation of mud and extraction of stone at Sonarkhette, with the connivance of some local ex-Comunidade officials. (H)

VELSAO'S MINI MARKET FAILS: The mini market complex constructed in the Velsao-Pale-Arossim panchayat's jurisdiction, has turned out to be a white element. Constructed two years ago, this market complex is a unique example of how government funds are wasted unmindful of improper planning. (NT)

WATER FOR POINGUINIM: Augmentation of water supply through the Chapoli dam from Canacona to Poinguinim constituency seems to be blocked in the pipeline, if one goes by the tardy pace of the ongoing work. The project, which had commenced in 1995 and programmed to be completed in 18 months, still remains incomplete despite utilisation of nearly Rs.7 crore. (H)
