SAUDI TO BAN EXPATRIATE CABBIES: Saudi Arabia has decided to ban expatriates, including Indians, from driving taxis within six months, in a move to provide employment opportunities to Saudi nations in the oil-rich kingdom. (PTI report in Herald)

CM WARNS COPS: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar was in a blatantly realistic mood, when he addressed the 252 recruit police constables at Valpoi training school. "I have received complaints that policemen have behaved roughly and arrogantly with people. This one of the reasons why they opt for approaching goondas, and paying them to solve their problems," he said. (H)

CONSTABLES WITH CLEAN RECORD: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Wednesday announced that efforts are on to provide 25 per cent reservation for the post of police sub-inspector to police constables with "clean" track record. Speaking at the attestation parade of 40th batch of recruit police constables held at Police Training School (PTS) in Valpoi, Parrikar said degree-holder constables will be entitled to promotions after five years of service. UGLY TURN: The police department were in a fix after the recruits threatened to boycott the ceremonywhere CM Parrikar, Chief Secretary Balleshwar Rai and the police top brass were scheduled to attendafter one of their batchmates, was slapped by an instructor, a head constable. (H)

RENTING OF SHOPS TO KASHMIRIS: The recent slapping of a woman during Benaulim gram sabha has raised eyebrows and has made the panchayat body to sit up and look for a solution to the problems between tourist taxi drivers and villagers renting shops and premises to Kashmiris. (GT)

TO BOOST POWER: Identifying Goa as a model state in the power sector, the Centre has allocated around Rs.120 crore to Goa for replacement of conductors and sub-stations in the State. (H)

MARCAIM BLAST: The All India Trade Union Congress has demanded that the company should fully compensate the families of the deceased and the injured in the blast of a boiler at Marcaim industrial estate. (GT) (GT)

AMBULANCE STOLEN: Some unknown persons have committed a theft of an ambulance belong to the Bicholim Municipal Council, on Monday evening. (GT)

'NARKASUR NITE': The police will crack-down on the abuses of the Narkasur celebrations. "We are not going to tolerate extortion in the name of the celebrations," a senior police officer categorically said. "Narkasur effigies will not be allowed at the cost of road blocking. We will not allow these effigies to be burnt on the roads," he stated. (H)

BOMB HOAX AT VARCA: It might have been yet another hoax bomb call, but the South Goa police were caught unawares to track the number as all the three caller IDs were non-functional. According to sources at the South Goa police headquarters, some prankster called to say that a bomb was planted in St Mary's High School at Varca. (GT)

POWER FOR ADULSHE: After 40 years of Liberation of Goa, the residents of Adulshe village in Sancorda panchayat in Sanguem, will receive electricity for the first time, on the eve of Diwali. (H)

GOVT URGED TO ACT: Cortalim MLA Matanhy Saldanha called upon the government to immediately activate the concerned departmental heads to act upon verbal or telephonic complaints particularly in matters pertaining to large-scale illegal constructions, land fillings, hill cutting and deforestation prevailing in the State. CONCESSION IN FERRY FARE: The residents of Chorao and Divar island have demanded 50 per cent concession for vehicles as well as passengers traveling by ferry, even as the government has decided to privatize 11 ferry routes in the State from 1 November. (GT)

GOA'S HERITAGE SHOW ON TV: Goa Doordarshan will telecast a `History and Heritage of Goa' show, anchored by Prajal Sakhardande, from October 31, every Thursday at 6 pm. Goa's rich antiquity through its heritage sites and monuments will be showcased in five episodes, focussed on sites like the entry point of Afonso de Albuquerque into Goa in 1510, Madhav Teerth, original Saptakoteshwar tank of the Kadambas, Adilshah's fort wall, palace wall of Adilshah at Old Goa, Kadamba temple gate at Old Goa, besides other places. The tile song Dona Paula is by Pundalik Nayak and music by Pratap Amonkar. (TOI)

"VIVA" TO PERFORM: India's sensation and number one all-girls band, Viva, is all set to storm Goa with its maiden show at Navelim on 9 November. (GT)

GU BOWS DOWN: Goa University has conceded to the demands of the engineering students. After a day-long meeting of the academic council, the Registrar of Goa University, Prof Budkuley told a delegation of the students that the examination pattern is re-scheduled to three attempts provided that the cumulative number of subjects of two semesters do not exceed six. (H)

VARSHA, PRINCE JACOB IN KONKANI FILM: Film actress Varsha Usgaonkar, former Speaker Tomazinho Cardozo and Prince Jacob will feature in a Konkani telefilm "It's My Life", directed by Dnyanesh Moghe, to be shot in Goa and Mangalore from 10 November. The main cast comprises Prince Jacob, Tomazinho Cardozo, Rajesh Pednekar, Tapan Ahcyarya and Varsha Usgoankar, who is acting for the first time in a Konkani film. (GT)

NEW WEBSITE: The Parent-Teachers Association of People's High School, Panaji, is in the process of launching a website, to serve the purpose of cherishing old memories as well as prepare the school for the new era. The PTA has requested all the past students to contribute to the website by sending photographs, especially from 1970 onwards, to the Principal, Ms Celina Almeida, by November 14. (NT)

WEBSITE ON MODELLING: The website www.gashinmodelsindia.com, to promote modeling talents in the country will be launched on November 2, with a modeling contest at Alva Mar, Parra, in conjunction with the Halloween 2002 dance. (H)

SAVIOUR OF REPTILES: Parish priest of Morjim's Our lady of Miracles Church Fr Luis Pinto has always been a saviour of reptiles and specializes in catching pythons. Every time he traps a snake, he makes it a point to educate the villagers in snake-handling, after which he personally hands it over to the forest department. Recently he caught his 55th python. MARY DEFEATS MARY: Ms Mary Caetano Fernandes was elected the Sarpanch of Saligao recently securing six votes while her rival Ms Mary Coutinho garnered three votes. Meanwhile, the Director of Panchayats has accepted the resignation of the Tivim Sarpanch, Ms Amancia Pereira. The resignation automatically makes the deputy Sarpanch, Mr Sydney Ferros, the acting Sarpanch, until a new Sarpanch is elected. (GT)
