CYBER CRIME ACCUSED APPOINTED CURATOR: Vishvesh Naik, accused in Goa's
first cyber crime, has been appointed to the post of Museum
Curator-cum-Artist at Goa Medical College by the Government of Goa. (H)
ADDL ADVOCATE GENERAL ISSUE: The United Goans Democratic Party has
toughened its stand vis-�-vis Additional Advocate General, Vilas Thali, by
asking the government to go as per the High Court directions and has termed
as "undemocratic" the manner in which the City of Panaji Corporation Bill
was passed by the government. (H)
TO STAY CLEAR: Speaking to reporters yesterday at the Congress House, the
Leader of the Opposition, Pratapsingh Rane said his party would act as a
responsible opposition and steer clear of making attempts to destabilize

GETTING READY FOR DIWALI: With Diwali, the festival of lights round the
corner, markets and some of the roads in the city have been crowded with
people making brisk purchases. Diwali will be celebrated in the State on

NARKASUR FESTIVITIES: While police superiors have made their intentions
clear, when it comes to tackling excesses that surface around Narkasur
festivities, cops at the ground-level seem to have different ideas. (H)
MINOR WAS BEATEN: A Crime Branch inquiry has confirmed the custodial
thrashing of Ishwar Singh, a minor, by the Panjim town police officials.
The report, which submitted yesterday, identifies Police Sub-Inspector CL
Patil as the officer, who allegedly meted out the beating. (H)
RANE CHIDES GOVT: Opposition Leader Pratapsingh Raoji Rane broke his
silence to caustically criticize the Manohar Parrikar-led government for
what he called its "shortcomings". While speaking to journalists in Panjim
Mr Rane claimed, "Goa is becoming increasingly insecure", and found fault
in the government's handling of the crime situation saying murders and
dacoities have become the order of the day. (H)
WATER SHORTAGE: Villagers in the Pernem taluka have a drinking water crisis
looming ahead as the Chandel water supply project stopped its operations
from yesterday. The operations were shut down by workers alleging that the
contractor had not paid salaries for the last three months. The contractor
is learnt to have claimed that the government had not cleared bills of
Rs.40 lakh submitted recently. The project supplies drinking water to 27
villages in the taluka. (GT)
HOTELIERS THREATEN: Margao Municipal Council's ambitious project of paid
collection of garbage from the city hotels gets underway from Friday but
hotel owners say they will stop paying the fees if the civic body fails to
do away with fast-food kiosk. (H)
NEW MARKET, NO TOILET: If the unhygienic conditions in Gandhi market in
Margao prompted social activist Deepa Murkunde to urinate in the market
inspector's office, the situation in the adjoining crowded New Market is
not anything better. What sounds strange about the New Market with 450-odd
small shops and establishments (over 250 women believed to be employed
there) is the total absence of a single toilet. (H)
MEDICINE COURSES: The Medical Council of India, New Delhi, has recommended
to the Goa University to deaffiliate two diploma coursesRadiology and
Gynaecology and Obstetricsat Goa Medical College, Bambolim, from next
academic year. It is learnt that there was shortage of instrumentation in
radiology department while there was shortage of teaching staff in the
gynaecology and obstetrics department. (GT)
2 INJURED: According to the police a scooterist, Mr Francis Caldeira, ports
jetty in Panjim. As a result, the rider sustained head injuries, while the
pillion rider, Ms Volga Caldeira from Porvorim, sustained hand fracture. (NT)
MADKAIKAR DONATES SALARY: Donating one's entire monthly salary of an
impressive Rs.30,000 for a charitable cause is quite uncommon. It's even
more unusual when the philanthropist happens to be Transport Minister
Pandurang Madkaikar. "Madkaikar's Nav Chaitanya Trust", a family trust,
will be inaugurated by CM Parrikar on November 2 at 7 pm at Old Goa
panchayat hall. (H)
SOUND POLLUTION: The State education resource centres, management,
principals of schools in all states and union territories have been
directed (by an order from the Supreme Court) to take appropriate steps to
educate students about the ill-effects of air and noise pollution caused by
the lighting of fire crackers. (NT)
BODY RECOVERED: The Porvorim police fished out the body of a 35-year-old
youth from the river Mandovi. (NT)
MARKET INSPECTOR ARRESTED: The mystery behind the missing ambulance of the
Bicholim Municipal Council was soon solved when the culprit happened to be
the market inspector Dadasaheb Pandurangrao Rane, with the stolen vehicle
being traced in Belgaum. (H)
NO ENTRY FOR GUIDES AT BASILICA: The Rector of Basilica of Bom Jesus, Old
Goa, has informed that no tourist guiding will be allowed inside the
Basilica from November 23 to December 4, in view of the annual festivities
of St Francis Xavier from November 24 to December 3. The Rector also seeks
cooperation of tourists requesting them to observe silence and proper
decorum in the complex. (H)
GOA'S GLORIOUS PAST: An exhibition of old post cards and pictures dating
back to 400 years is being held at Ancestral Goa, Loutulim. A brainchild of
Mr Maendra Alvares, this exhibition will showcase more than 175 old post
cards and pictures giving a complete idea of Goa, when it was ruled by the
Portuguese. (NT)
E-REMIT FACILITY AT GTB: Continuing its initiatives to use technology to
make banking easy for customers, Global Trust Bank announced the launch of
e-Remit facility and simultaneously inaugurated 10 more ATMs in New Delhi. (H)
PARRIKAR AND POLICE: "The Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar, has urged
the policemen to be more responsible and sensitive towards people. We hope
the government means it. Because there is a wide chasm between police and
public, and the blame for it largely goes to the menespecially the officers
