EXTERNMENT CASES DROPPED: In a startling development, six externment cases filed by the North District police against alleged notorious personsJoeboy Lopes (Merces), Dharmendra Kauthankar (Tivim), Santosh Naik (Khorlim), Mahesh Hebbalkar (Verla, Canca), Sainath Lingudkar (Canca) and Shivdas Madkar (Sanquelim)have been dropped by the Additional District Magistrate SS Keshkamat. BABY FOUND IN BUSHES: A new born female infant was abandoned in the bushes on Thursday night near the Vidhyaprabodini High School in Porvorim. According to Porvorim police, an anonymous caller informed the police at 11.30 pm that he had heard the cries of a baby in the bushes. (H)

MARGAO COUNCIL DY CHIEF RESIGNS: Alleging that "touts and middlemen rule the roost in the council", the Margao Municipal vice chairperson, Ms Ethel Lobo, tendered her resignation yesterday. (NT)

PMC RAZES TWO-STOREY BDLG: In a major drive against illegal constructions, the Panjim Municipal Council on Friday razed to the ground a two-storey building at Boca da Vaca. Realising that the Chief Officer, Mr Sanjit Rodrigues had initiated action only after studying the matter in detail, the Chief Minister declined to stop the demolition operation much to the displeasure of a few party supporters. RULING WON'T AFFECT MINORITIES: A Supreme Court ruling that the state could apply regulatory measures on educational institutions run by minorities for academic excellence even when they are unaided will have hardly any bearing on institutions in the State. Fr Tony Salema, Secretary of Diocesan Society of Education, felt that there was nothing much to be excited about in the apex court ruling for the minorities in Goa as it relates to admissions of students, which is devoid of any problem here. HOT CHASE, CARTRIDGES FOUND: Margao police nabbed one Bulli alias Bulliver Rodrigues after a hot chase near RTO office at Arlem last night while moving in a car in a suspicious manner and allegedly recovered three live cartridges from the vehicle. (H)

IN SEARCH OF BLAND CHILLIES: Nearly 500 years after it revolutionized the dishes on the dining table in Goa scientists are looking for some 'mild to less pungent' varies of the chilly. Brought to Goan shores by the Portuguese sometime between 1510 and 1588, the chilly spread to other parts of India, as it became an essential spice in cooking some dishes, specially meat. (GT)

CM'S LETTER BOWLED WILLY: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar's pleasant letter and a suggestion to reap the benefits of his (Dr Wilfred de Souza's) 'wisdom' prompted the NCP president to accept the deputy chairmanship of the Planning Commission. (GT)

PARRA JUNCTION: A row has erupted over permission granted by the Parra panchayat to a private party to construct a storeyed building near the accident-prone Parra junction, with villagers threatening to launch an agitation. Saligao MLA Dr Wilfred de Souza has demanded action against the Parra Sarpanch Jospin D'Cruz for granting the licence when the gram sabha had passed a resolution on 20 January last year reserving the plot for a roundabout. NOT NEEDED: The government has decided that administrative wings in the government should not insist on the production of ration cards for identification purposes. The government and its agencies could consider other valid documents like passport, driving licence, voter identity card, bank pass book or identity card issued by income tax authorities for verifying the identity of individuals. KONKANI BOOK RELEASED: Antonio da Piedade Morais released the latest book "Konknni Borounchi Promann (Devanagri Lipient)" of Thomas Stephens Konkani Kendr at a function held recently at Loyola High School, Margao. Dr Pratap Naik, sj; Mathew Almeida, sj; and Shilpa Shinde have authored the book. (GT)

FASHION SHOW AT BRITONA: Designer Wendell Rodricks will present a collection of 30 exclusive garments crafted to "wear with happiness" at the launch of Goa Plus, from the Times of India, and "Starz", the lounge bar of "Under the Bridge". (H)

CAUTION FOR TOURISTS: The Tourism Department has advised the tourists and public to avoid venturing into the sea as the staff, particularly lifeguards, will be on leave in view of the Diwali festival on November 4. (NT)

FRENCH NATIONAL FOUND DEAD: Rachid Ouaret, a 47-year-old French national, was found dead outside a bar and restaurant at Chapora Vagator. According to Anjuna police, Oaret had arrived in Goa on October 30 and was residing in Anjuna. He is believed to have suffered a massive heart attack while returning to his room, and was found dead outside the restaurant. (H)

JOHN AGUIAR, an official in the state-run Information & Publicity Department, is the new Company Commander of the Home Guards. Aguiar was selected as the best all round student in Chowgule College, Margao. He is also a Konkani poet and writer, and has to his credit a book called "Paulam" on poems in Konkani. (GT)

RAJANI, WOMAN POSTMAN: She may look very simple, but Rajani S Dessai, the lone postwoman in Margao post office, is truly an extraordinary woman. It is her 22-year stint in a profession that is otherwise considered a male reserve, which makes her special. Even in the age of a technology revolution, internet and emails, her job has not been simplified. It's the same old task of walking down the small lanes of Kharebandh, Pedda and other suburbs in Margao. (NT)

SAMEER, FASTEST GOAN ATHLETE: Sameer Bhomkar was declared as the fastest man when he won the 100 m with a record timing of 0.8 seconds clipping the old record by 0.2 seconds in the 31st State athletic meet held at Campal grounds in Panaji on November 1. (GT)

ALL SOULS DAY: Goan Catholics may occasionally miss a Sunday mass, but they will hardly ever miss the mass on All Souls Day--2nd November. The churches were jampacked for the mass this morning, and then the people visited the cemeteries to pray at the graveyard of their dear departed. For once, the cemetries were cleaned and spruced up for the occasion, and the tombstones decked up with beautiful flowers, wreaths and candles...Of course, the Assagao cemetery takes the cake for being the cleanest one in the State, thanks to its hardworking sacristan Assis Conceicao Fernandes. LUBE NO MORE: D Augusto de Noronha e Tavora, popularly known in Goa as Lube, breathed his last after a prolonged illness on November 2002. A veteran footballer, who founded the once famous "Kitem Fine" football team in Siolim, rarely missed any important football match. The funeral will take place at St Inez today at 15.00 hrs.
