Just to take the debate forward... I might not be so harsh in judging Lamba. It's just that each one of us has a way of defining 'culture' and 'community' in the way we perceive it. Can it be said that one interpretation is any more valid than the other? My earlier argument was aimed at saying that there are many different ways of interpreting what might appear to be a common reality. That language is a new border for defining people of western coastal India (beyond Goa), with all its implications.... Apart from the minor errors that Jorge pointed out to, that obviously crept in unintentionally, the piece is just another way of defining identity (based on language). Of course, defining identity is alway a controversial and probably political task. But then, we don't complain when the writer's biases tally with ours, do we?
