o Journo's Diary: Pleasures of Goa which Pune could not give
One can argue at length, about the credibility of
a sinner's tale. The sinner being this reporter,
and the 'sin' in question - being part of a
press entourage on a government sponsored
jaunt, oops... sorry, a technical tour of
  National Highway - 4A, Pune-Mumbai expressway
and inspection of NH-17, by the honourable PWD Minister
Ramkrishna Dhavalikar and officials from the Public
Works Department. A fascinating story on how the media works,
  from Mayabhushan Nagvenkar ([EMAIL PROTECTED]).

o Katha from Delhi: 21 languages for the 21st century?

No Konkani writer was here to represent
Konkani amchi mai bhas at the recently
concluded workshop organised by 'Katha' a
Delhi-based centre for the promotion of Indian
languages, held from October 20-22, writes Dr
                          Brian Mendonca <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>.

o Saffron forces get legitimacy in Parrikar's two-year tenure

In Goa, the mood was sombre and the
celebrations down to a minimum, to mark Chief
Minister Manohar Parrikar's two years in power
on in late October, writes Devika Sequeira of
  the Deccan Herald.

o On Being Half Goan: What's the Fuss About?

Linda Ekman, the writer of this article, is a
psychology graduate from the University of
London and is doing postgraduate studies. She
wrote the article in 2001 in the Goan Overseas
Digest, then in print, now online.

o Good, Bad and Ugly: Politics of Christian Conversions in India

There is a thin line between the constitutional
right to propagate and the derived right to
convert and be converted. Granted that these
are fundamental rights enshrined in the Indian
Constitution, the debate skirts around it and
circles around methodology, the argument being
that if some of the means are bad and are prohibited the
problem would have resolved itself, writes Alban Couto a
senior official, now retired back to his family home in
Aldona. He can be contacted via email
   macouto at goatelecom dot com

o Court takes a look at Goa's mining-bloodied interior

Three writ petitions filed by ordinary villagers
affected by mining in different parts of Goa
came up for hearing before the Bombay High
Court in the past year. The good news is that in
each case, the Court came down heavily on the
conduct of the mining companies involved and
took firm steps to provide relief to petitioners
               and to the environment, writes
               environmental lawyer Norma Alvares who
can be contacted via email oib at goatelecom dot
com. Goa's press was once mining dominated; but
now the media has no commercial-interest-at-stake
alibi for not taking up this issue.
