KARWAR NAVAL AIRPORT FOR CIVILIAN AIRCRAFT: Addressing media persons after
inspecting the ongoing project work at Bianaga-Karwar on Monday evening,
Defence Minister George Fernandes said the Union government has given its
sanction for civilian aircraft to use the Navy airport at Karwar, following
demands from the people of the area. The runway, which was designed for
naval aircraft, will now be extended from 200 metres to 300 metres, to
facilitate the operation of civilian aircraft. (H)
BSNL'S 2 PRE-FIX: BSNL doesn't seem to have done its job properly the day
the telephone numbers changed from six digits to seven. When the new
numbering came into effect, there was no recorded message informing about
the pre-fix of 2. What was worse was that dialing six digit numbers gave an
engaged tone. Some numbers, particularly those beginning with 4 could be
dialed without adding 2 to the number. (H)
BURGLARS STRIKE PORVORIM POLICE QUARTERS: Two day-light burglaries in quick
succession at Porvorim on Sunday afternoon sent tremors all over the area,

Burglars broke into a residence of Francis J Esteves of Malim-Penha da
Franca and stole gold ornaments worth Rs.3.3 lakh while the family had gone
to Merces to attend the church feast. In the second incident, burglars
broke open a lock and entered a police quarter near the Housing Board
Colony, decamping with cash and gold worth Rs.45,000. (H)

efforts to realize the aspirations of the members. (H)
TO FIGHT MALARIA: The Malaria Research Centre, Goa, in their extensive
field surveys conducted, have found 15 species of larvivorous fish. They
are naturally engaged in the control of mosquito developmental stages in
fresh as well as brackish water bodies. The experts opine that since they
were found in almost every water body the lesser mosquito nuisance in the
rural areas could be largely explained due to this fact. (NT)

PRESERVING HERITAGE: The city garden fountains of Panaji have been
activated and the city wears a cool and pleasant look in the evenings. It
is heartening to note that the Mermaid Garden opposite the tourist hostel
is also being beautified and rejuvenated. I would like to suggest to the
concerned authorities to put up signages in the cities which would speak of
the names of the squares, gardens and bridges. (Prajal Sakhardande in My
