WATER SUPPLY: The below average rainfall received by Goa this year will not result in acute shortage of water of the kind invariably faced by the State's populace in the summer months, claims the Public Works Department. The reason says the PWD chief, PP Borkar, is that remedial civil works taken up to offset such shortages last year, will have fructified in the troublesome March-April-May months next year. (H)

"FIT FOR CHILDREN": Children's Day is being celebrated in Goa today. The Chief Minister, in his message to the children on the occasion, has extended to them warm greetings and assured that his government would strive to make Goa a state "fit for children", placing their interests on priority. Parrikar further said that the year 2003 is declared as "Year of the Child" in Goa and also his government has set up a Goa Children's Fund to make the dreams of children a reality. (H)

SARPANCH ASSAULTED: A row over the allotment of space for stalls for the upcoming St Francis Xavier's feast at Old Goa resulted in an assault on Sarpanch Nilkanth Bhomkar by two youths on Tuesday, at the panchayat office. (GT)

POWER CUTS IN SALCETE: For the last couple of months villages of Cavelossim, Carmona, Orlim, Varca and part of Benaulim are literally at the mercy of the electricity department. The current is inevitably shut off for at least 6 to 7 hours a day. (GT)

CURTI RESIDENTS BLOCK GARBAGE DUMPING: Unhappy with the Ponda Municipal Council's decision to dump garbage in their village, the Curti-Khandepar Sarpanch along with residents prevented the PMC garbage trucks from transporting garbage to the site in Curti on Wednesday morning. (H)

OLD GMC BUILDING: The Old GMC building in Panaji is under demolition. The area of around 12,000 sq mts will be utilized for a new market complex. (GT)

"LEAVE NO ROOM FOR COMPLAINTS": Sanjith Rodrigues, OSD (Elections) has explained to all the officers to take the programme seriously and help in updating the electoral rolls leaving no room for any complaints. (H)

CULTURAL POLICY: Minister for Art and Culture Ramrao Desai has said that Goa will soon have a cultural policy and that a task force has been appointed for the purpose. (GT)

AIDS CASES IN GOA: More than 33 per cent of the total HIV/AIDS cases in Goa are in the age-group of 15-29 even as four coastal talukas, namely Mormugao, Salcete, Tiswadi and Bardez, top the list of having the highest number of cases, according to the data gathered by the Goa State AIDS Control Society. EXTORTION CASE: The Old Goa police have registered a case of extortion against Felix Fernandes alias Bobbit from Merces. (NT)

MISHAP IN BETUL: Tempers ran high in Baradi-Velim on Wednesday morning when a car turned turtle after it skidded off on the main Betul road due to spillage of fish water. Irate citizens from the area met late in the evening at Baradi and formed a Velim-Betul Citizens Committee to work towards stopping fish transporting pick-up vans from plying without observing conditions. PRAYER HALL FOR WOMEN: The newly inaugurated mosque, Masjid-e-Noor, a Muslim prayer house, has a unique feature of a prayer hall exclusively for the ladies. (NT)

BREACHED SLUICE GATE AT MERCES: A sluice gate at Morombi-o-Grande and Renawadi, Merces, has been destroyed and heavy flow of water has entered the fields causing huge losses to the farmers. (H)

FAMILIES TO BE REHABILITATED: Over 606 families, who will be displaced due to the four-lane highway project from Verna to Vasco Harbour, are to be rehabilitated by March 31, 2003. This was decided at the meeting of the Rehabilitation Board, headed by CM Manohar Parrikar, which was convened at the MPT on Wednesday. (H)

PALACIO DE DEAO CONTROVERSY: About 50 agitating residents staged a morcha at the Palacio de Deao at Quepem on Wednesday morning, in a bid to force a family to vacate the premises of the age-old structure. Led by Ivor Tito of Bhatt-Quepem, the protestors went to the house at 9 am. (H)

THE RHYTHM IN PAINTING: "Rang-Kavya", a unique exhibition of paintings of Sadguru Chendvankar, supported by short creatively potent and apt poems penned by Vishnu Surya Wagh complimenting the paintings, is showing at the Kala Academy Art Gallery. (Naguesh R Sardessai in NT)
