SHUN RELIGIOUS DISCRIMINATION: While reiterating the strong tradition of
communal harmony in Goa, Archbishop Patriarch of Goa and Daman Raul
Gonsalves exhorted the Catholic community to avoid all discrimination,
especially on the basis of religion, as they are to bear a true testimony
to the society at large. He was delivering the homily at the high mass of
the feast of St Francis Xavier, attended by an estimated 15,000 devotees,
outside the world famous Bom Jesus Basilica at 10.30 am on December 3. In a
second homily, Archbishop Abraham of Nagpur, who is the chairman of Western
Region Bishops Council, said that the 450th death anniversary of St Francis
is a historic moment not only for Goans, but for everyone all over the
world, who revere St Francis Xavier. (H)
WATER SCARCITY AT OLD GOA: The insensitivity of authorities to the woes of
the people was amply demonstrated on the feast day of St Francis Xavier,
when taps ran dry for the major part of the day at Old Goa…Despite strong
complaints made to some ministers and the chief minister's office as well,
the situation continued without any positive action. (H)
MISSING RICE AND WHEAT: The Civil Supplies Department has chargesheeted
three of its employeesSebastiao Palha, Ramesh Shinde and Rajaram
Kavlekarholding them responsible for the disappearance of approximately 15
tonnes of rice and wheat from the government-run godowns at Cortalim. (H)
STPI OFFICE IN GOA: At "The Goa Agenda-IT for Society", a two-day strategy
retreat designed to catalyse the focus on the new and emerging applications
and synergies with the IT industry, the IT Minister, Mr Francis D'Souza,
announced that a comprehensive IT Policy draft, taking care of different
spheres of IT is in the finalization stage and Goa should be a e-governed
State within a maximum period of five years. (NT)
MOLESTATION CHARGE: Mapusa police arrested a seventh standard boy (15) from
Khorlim-Mapusa for allegedly molesting a girl from the same locality. (GT)
ISRAELI WITH CHARAS: In the first large seizure of charas, an
Anti-Narcotics Cell squad arrested an IsraeliRon Chayak--for possessing
1.32 kg charas at Sorantto, Anjuna on December 2. (H)
NAVELIM RESIDENT ASSAULTED: Eight persons from Telaulim-Navelim formed an
unlawful assembly on the night of December 2 and assaulted Mr Alex
Fernandes residing in the same area. Mr Fernandes has been admitted into
the Margao hospital. (NT)
SCOOTER GUTTED: In a freak mishap last night one person was seriously
injured when the scooter he was riding caught fire on coming in contact
with exposed power cables at Circuit House, Altinho, Panjim. (GT)
KONKANI SAMMELAN: Noted playwright and Konkani writer Dattaram Kamat
Bambolkar has been nominated as president of the fifth Yuva Konkani Sahitya
Sammelan, which will be held at SS Angle Higher Secondary School,
Mashem-Canacona from 6 to 8 December. (GT)
BODY FOUND: Maina Curtorim police discovered a body floating in River
Zuari, which was identified as that of one Michael Xavier. (H)

directory, which is updated upto September 02 of Maharashtra & Goa is
available in all the customer service centres for sale at Rs.53 with effect

DUAL CITIZENSHIP: The debate over Goans acquiring Portuguese citizenship
under the Portuguese nationality law has turned meaningless with the
Government of India seriously considering granting of "dual citizenship" to
people of Indian origin who are now citizens of another country, according
to former Union minister and MP, Mr Eduardo Faleiro. (NT)
GOA TO HOST KITE CARNIVAL: Goans will get an opportunity to watch the first
international Goa Kite Carnival to be organised at Vagator beach on 18 and
19 January next year. It is being jointly organised by Nomad Travels, Goa
Tourism Department and the Nomad Heritage Trust. Over 30 participants from
USA, UK, France, Holland, Belgium, Singapore, Malaysia and South Africa are
expected to participate along with the best Indian teams. (GT)
COMPUTER EDUCATION IN LOCAL LANGUAGES: Minister for Information Technology
Francisco D'Souza has stressed the need to impart computer education in
local languages, which he said will help learn computers and gain knowledge
easily. (H)
IMPROVING WORK QUALITY: Viewing with concern the mediocre project work
being submitted at the third year level of science, arts and commerce
streams, a Goa University's specially appointed committee has suggested
that the maximum number of students allotted to each guide be decreased
from the present ten to five in order to increase individual participation
and improvement of the quality of work. (H)

DR KAKODKAR'S LECTURE: Dr Anil Kakodkar, chairman, Atomic Energy Commission
and Secretary, Government of India, Department of Atomic Energy, delivered
a technical lecture on "Nuclear Energy in India: An inevitable option of
our sustainable development" at the Padre Conceicao College of Engineering,
Verna. Dr Kakodkar elaborated on the various uses of nuclear energy for
