YOUTH WITH KNIFE HELD: Alert personnel of Central Industrial Security Force attached to the Dabolim International Airport nabbed a youth, Raul Delip Bom, from Pune, who attempted to board a Mumbai-Goa flight on Tuesday evening with an 11-inch knife, a banned item for passengers traveling by air. The over 200 passengers included the Governor of Uttar Pradesh, Vishnu Kant Shastri, who was also to fly by the Sahara Goa-Mumbai flight. (H)

INVESTMENT IN EDUCATION: The Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar, yesterday said that true education generates in students the capacity to analyse information to reach quality decisions and that literacy is only a small part of education. (NT)

TOURIST ARRIVALS PICK UP: Foreign tourists arrivals have picked up lately and hotel bookings for the Christmas-New Year periods seems to be high. Though the much typed charters from Tel Aviv did not operate, six flights came from Russia. Goa has so far in this season, been visited by around 19,000 foreigners who preferred to come by charters. Most of the tourists were from the UK. Goa has 71 charter flights, 14 per week on an average. (H)

SUICIDE PACT: In an apparent suicide pact between a Tamil Nadu coupleVM Mahesh and MV Parvati, aged around 30)--living in the Calangute Residency, the husband committed suicide by hanging himself to the ceiling fan while his wife swallowed 14 tablets to end her life last night. She, however, survived and is now being treated at the Goa Medical College, Bambolim. (NT)

EX-DYSP'S SON ARRESTED: The police have arrested Rajesh Zuwarkar, son of a former Deputy Superintendent of Police, for assaulting Sameer Kamat, a city businessman, by trespassing into his office at Cardozo building, located near the Panjim KTC bus stand, on December 2. (H)

POSTMASTER ASSAULTED: The Cuncolim police arrested one Janu Babu Velip of Morpirla for allegedly assaulting post-master of Morpirla, Mr Sanjay Uttam Naik. The alleged accused came to the post office and later questioned him about the delay in delivering a passport postal slip and further assaulted him while discharging his duties. (NT)

GOA ELECTORATE TOUCHES 9,39,446: The total electorate in Goa increased to 9,39,446 following the inclusion of 13,647 voters during the special summary revision of electoral rolls held last month. (GT)

"IRREGULAR" SUPPLY OF FARM PRODUCTS: Some of the 5-star hoteliers, who were buying the agricultural produce from local farmers, had bad experiences, as local farmers on whom they relied on for a regular supply, abruptly stopped the supplies without any intimation. It is learnt from studies conducted that most of the Goan farmers go in for farming on a small scale and on a small tract of land. When things don't turn up as expected, these farmers panic and stop the cultivation. (H)

ELECTRIFIED FENCE KILLS MAN: Francis Mathew Fernandes, a farmer who tried to protect his farm by electrifying the fence around his farm in Sanguem, was arrested on charges of culpable homicide when Rajendra Phaldesai died after coming in contact with the electrified fence. (GT)

EMPOWER FAMILIES: Empowerment of the family in order to have a vibrant Church has been the vision statement that highlighted the concluding day of the recent two-day Western Region Catholic Council at Pilar on December 2. (H)

ST FRANCIS, A COMIC-BOOK SUPERHERO: The biography of Goa's patron saint, St Francis Xavier, is being published in cartoon form and will be available soon in ten languages, including English. The publishers Mensajero Publishers of Spain entrusted the work of drawing sketches to Miguel Berzosa, who specializes in religious comics, according to ZENIT. (GT)

EXTORTION CASE: The JMFC, Panjim, has directed that a bailable warrant of Rs.500 be issued to Oscar D'Souza, the complainant in the extortion case filed against Atanasio Monserrate, Town and Country Planning Minister, alias Babush, for remaining absent in court. (H)

CHOPDEM-MANDREM ROAD DANGEROUS: A seven-kilometre stretch of road between Chopdem and Mandrem that stands widened, may well become a death trap, once the asphalting and black toping being undertaken is completed. Residents are shocked to see the work being completed without the electricity and telephone poles being shifted. The poles dangerously close to the road, and in some areas, right on the road. (GT)

SANVORDEM-CURCHOREM PARALLEL BRIDGE: Minister for Industries Ramrao Dessai announced yesterday that a new parallel bridge linking Sanvordem and Curchorem would soon be constructed. (GT)

KONKAN RAILWAY HOLIDAY SPECIALS: Konkan Railway Corporation has planned to run holiday specials in order to clear the extra rush, during the ensuing holiday season. These trains will be plying on Nizamuddin-Margao and Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (Kurla)-Margao routes, in co-ordination with the Northern and the Central Railway. (H)

ANJUNA "FLEA MARKET": When it first started in 1972, a small band of western hippies sold genuine foreign goods there. Now the Anjuna "flea market" has burgeoned in a sprawling mela of mostly "Lamani" stalls. Yet the weekly market, held from October to May, continues to be a big draw both for vendors and buyers. NATIONAL HANDICRAFTS EXPO; A two-month long exhibition-cum-sale of a variety of consumer durables, games and other household articles awaits housewives, children and office-goers when it is opened at the EDC Patto Plaza, Panaji, from 6 December at 6 pm. The grand "Goa Gate" Handloom Handicrafts National Exhibition will be opened for the public from the next day from 4 pm to 9.30 pm daily. (GT)
