NO MISAPPROPRIATION: NARVEKAR: Deputy Leader of the Opposition and Goa
Cricket Association president Dayanand Narvekar yesterday clarified that
there was no misappropriation of GCA funds and alleged that one of the GCA
executive members Dr Shekhar Salkar had targeting him at the instance of

GCA OFFICE RAIDED: The police seized some documents and other paraphernalia
during a raid, which was conducted at the office premises of the Goa
Cricket Association located at Rizvi Chambers, on December 6. (H)
MAINTENANCE OF NATURE: Governor Kidar Nath Shahani said the indigenous
people's principle of reciprocal maintenance of nature was relevant now as
its care was central to the health and well-being of human beings. He was
inaugurating the two-day international seminar on "Environmental Governance
and Security: Perspective from Above and Below", organised by Goa
University, Konrad Adenauer Foundation and Tata Energy Research Institute

HUNTER KILLED: Mariano Costa (40) of Galli, St Jose de Areal, who went
hunting in the hills along with his two sons on sighting a Iguana, went
after it. But the reptile sped up a tree. Not to be outdone by the lizard,
Mariano kept climbing up the tree with his rifle. Unfortunately, he lost
his balance and came crashing down on one of the branches of tree. (GT)
RELEASE OF DRUG CONVICT: The Panjim Bench of the Bombay High Court had held
that Swiss convict Gerard Tschappat, allegedly found in the possession of
drugs at Panjim, is entitled to immediate release on the payment of a fine,
substituting his ten-year sentence with one already undergone by him. (H)
ORNAMENTS STOLEN: Gold ornaments worth Rs.48,000 were stolen from the house
of Ms Clara Paes at Gogol in Margao during daytime on Thursday. Police
suspect the housemaid. (BT)
BURGLARY IN BICHOLIM: The residence of Sripad Joshi, near Housing Board
Colony, Bicholim, was burgled and Rs.9,000, a wrist watch and a pair of
golden earrings ere reported stolen. (GT)
THALI'S PLEA DISMISSED: The Apex Court has recently dismissed the special
leave petition filed by Addl Advocate General, Vilas Thali, challenging the
order passed by the Panjim Bench of the Bombay High Court directing the
government to make relevant files and bills of fees available to petitioner
Advocate JP D'Souza in order to enable him to make his representation in
that regard. (H)
PROHIBITING WASHING OF CARS ON ROAD: The Panjim Municipal Council is very
shortly going to prohibit the washing of cars on its streets in the
capital. These stringent measures will come into force once the roads are
hot-mixed and spruced up with markings and safety signs. (H)
VIVA KONKANI: Every sensitive writer with a sense of pride should be
prepared to come on the roads to protect the identity of the land and his
language from all kinds of aggressions, said Premanand Gajvi, a famous
Marathi playwright, while inaugurating the 5th Yuva Konkani Sahitya
Sammelan at Mashem in Canacona. He was speaking after inaugurating the
conference, jointly organised by the Goa Konkani Academy and SS Angle

TELEPHONE DIRECTORY RELEASED: The Goa Telephone Directory 2002 with yellow
pages was released at the hands of the Union Minister of State for Civil
Aviation, Shripad Naik at a function held at Goa Marriott's on Friday

INDUSTRIALISATION OF GOA: The IT parks and IT Habitat floated by the
government have failed miserably to attract any new establishments in Goa.
The government schemes lack the thrust and they remain only on paper. The
intention behind introducing all these schemes may be good but the
implementation is lacking, as there is no will to do so. (An Economic

FOR DISTURBING FOREIGNERS: Colva police detained six lamanis from the Varca
beach, who were allegedly disturbing the foreigners strolling on the beach. (H)
MANDOVI PELLETS: The management of Mandovi Pellets has advised its
employees, barring those employed for essential services, not to report for
duties till further notice. The plan has ceased operations from June this
year due to acute financial crisis. (GT)
POLITICALLY MOTIVATED: The Parra panchayat has claimed that the complaint
made by Saligao MLA Dr Wilfred de Souza, in connection with the
controversial construction of a building near a junction, is politically
motivated and is devoid of any merit. (H)
VILLAGERS THREATEN: Residents affected by dust pollution in Capxem village
of Sanvordem have threatened to stage rasta rook, if they are not given
proper compensation by mining companies carrying on loading activity at
Capxem. (H)
MARGAO FEAST: The majestic Margao Church dedicated to the Holy Spirit is
all set to celebrate the feast of Our Lady of Immaculate Conception on 9
December. The nine-day preparation to the feast attracted over 13,000
Catholic brethren at which special themes from the Diocesan Synod document

ARCHIVES WEEK: The directorate of Archives and Archaeology will celebrate
Archives Week from December 10 to 17. To mark the occasion the Directorate
will organise an exhibition of rare historical documents in Portuguese and

PAINTINGS EXHIBITION: An art exhibition by five budding artistsShweta
Narvenkar, Tripti Vernekar, Bindiya Dalvi, Shraddha Salkar and Priya
Vernekarwill be inaugurated by renowned artist Harshada Kerkar Sonak on
December 9 at the Kala Academy's art gallery. The exhibition will remain

the prestigious Thomas Cook/JMC "Partners in Excellence" award for the Best

BEST CENTRE AWARD: The Goa Centre of Indian Concrete Institute, a
professional body of civil engineers, was conferred with the Best Centre
award for the year 2001-2002 at India International Centre in New Delhi. (NT)
OLIVER PASSES AWAY: Mr Oliver Andrade, of Zaino-Velim, who was a house-hold
name in Mumbai sports circles, passed away on Wednesday. He was 73 and
leaves behind his wife Mabel. "The stocky sportsman-player, coach, manager
and sponsorall rolled in onewas the king of football and hockey in Bandra,"
said Mr Lino Alemao former senior national football referee from Mumbai.
Oliver, a NIS qualified coach, trained schools boys, footballers and hockey
players from Little Flower of Jesus, St Stanislaus, St Andrews, St Theresa,
Sacred Heart of Jesus and St Paul's, Dadar. He played for Goan Sports Club.
