MEND YOUR WAYS: BJP TELLS PARRIKAR: While the intended cancellation of five
public holidays by the Parrikar government has stirred a hornet's nest,
some BJP leaders, who met twice during the last few days, have expressed
their annoyance over its latest unilateral decision. In a bid to steady the
rocking boat in the aftermath of the public criticism over the cancellation
of the holidays, the partymen sent across a strong message to Parrikar,
urging more transparency on issues, which may affect the party image.

NOT TO ALTER EMPLOYMENT RULES: The fifth Yuva Konkani Literary Conference,
which concluded on December 8, expressed fears that the future of the
unemployed Goans will be bleak if the existing provisions for employment
were reversed. The meet also demanded that provisions be made to make Goa
prosper. The conference held that the Goa government had made knowledge of
Konkani compulsory for government employment, to protect interest of sons
of the soil… thousands of new government jobs are being created due to
retirement of thousands of employees. In fact, it was necessary to make the
provisions of protecting locals' interest more stringent.

SLEEPING AT NEIGHBOUR'S HOUSE: Leaving the house uninhabited to sleep at
neighbour's place proved costly for a Calata-Majorda woman, Natalina
Carvalho, as unknown culprits decamped with gold ornaments and cash all
valued at Rs.26,000 on December 7 night. (H)
PROTECTION OF ENVIRONMENT: The Governor of Goa, Mr Kidar Nath Sahani, has
highlighted the vital importance of environment and said that we should
involve both private and public decision-making levels. While speaking at
the inauguration of a seminar on "Environmental Governance and Security" at
Dona Paula on December 7, the governor also mentioned about the importance
of environmental governance for caring for the underprivileged and deprived

GOVT'S INDIFFERENCE: Its jurisdiction may extend to two Rural Medical
Dispensaries and as many as 13 Sub Health Centres, yet the Sanguem Primary
Health Centre (PHC) is itself one of the most neglected health centres in
the State, to such an extent, that the 25-bedded government run PHC is now
reduced to 12 beds, which incidentally is expected to cater to the medical
needs of the largest taluka in Goa. Opened shortly before the liberation of
Goa, the building premise, which houses this lone health centre in Sanguem,
is badly in need of renovation.

HOUSE GUTTED IN ORLIM: A house belonging to Cypriano D'Souza of Naikavaddo
in Orlim was completely gutted in a major fire incident that occurred on
the night of December 7. (H)
ADVOCATES TO BOYCOTT COURTS: Advocates from North Goa shall observe a
protest day on December 9 and will abstain from attending court proceedings
in protest against the change in court timings. (H)
DRIVER COMMITS SUICIDE: Santosh Shripad Bhatt, 32, a rickshaw driver from
Bandora, committed suicide at his residence on Saturday. Bhat was found
hanging from a ceiling fan. (GT)
MAN COMMITS SUICIDE: Filip Gomes, a resident of St Jose Areal, committed
suicide at his residence on December 8 afternoon. Police stated that the
motive behind the suicide was not known. (NT)
TEENAGER ARRESTED: Tony Fernandes, a teenager from Varca, who was
committing thefts of two-wheelers fell into the police net. He was caught
by a crowd and handed over to the police while he was attempting to commit
the theft of a two-wheeler parked near the KTC bus stand. (NT)
NAVELIM VP MEET: Urbanised Navelim on Sunday (Dec 8) woke up to the grim
reality of overflowing soakpits, inadequate garbage and plastic disposal
and tenants occupying rented premises sans panchayat permission with the
Gram Sabha calling for cracking a whip to curb the menace. The gram sabha
members called upon the panchayat body to take to task all households, who
have let their premises on rent to tenants, without paying the taxes.

PANAJI CHURCH FEAST: The annual feast of the Church of Immaculate
Conception will be celebrated on December 9 in Panaji. The feast would be
solemnised at a special service at 9.30 a.m., which will be presided over
by the parish priest, Fr Antimo Gomes. The Navhind Times will celebrate the
evening mass at 5.30 p.m. followed by fire works and brass band.

PORTUGUESE FILM FEST: The IV Portuguese Film Festival will be inaugurated
by Dr Miguel de Calheiros Velozo, Consul General of Portugal, at Clube
Vasco da Gama on December 9. The three-day film festival organised by
Indo-Portuguese Friendship Society (IPFS)-Goa, in association with Fundacao
Cidade de Lisboa, a Portugal-based social and cultural organisation will
present some of the noted films produced in Portugal.

COPS ON GCA TREASURE HUNT: The Panaji police has asked Goa Cricket
Association (GCA) secretary Vinod Phadke to produce all missing records,
specially receipt book, cash books, ledgers and other documents in its
efforts to trace a missing account amounting to nearly Rs.40 lakh. The
police interrogated Phadke and Ranji player C Ashok, who was acting
treasurer for a brief spell during 1998-2000, and also former treasurer

JMFC ACQUITS TICLO: The Judicial Magistrate of First Class, Mapusa, Vijaya
Pol, acquitted M/s VS Ticlo and Sons (owners of a petrol pump in Mapusa)
