PARRIKAR TO TAKE UGDP INTO CONFIDENCE: Oft-repeated complaints by United Goans Democratic Party that the party is being sidelines by the government on important issues seems to have been resolved with Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar promising to interact with the regional outfit leaders every month. This was decided at a meeting CM Parrikar and his second in command, Urban Development Minister Digambar Kamat had with senior UGDP leaders on December 8. (H)

ARRESTED FOR FASTING UNTO DEATH: A Borda citizen, Bernard Ferreira, who began a fast unto death on Monday morning, landed in the Hospicio hospital alter around noon after he was picked up and arrested by the police. Ferreira, who claims that his records in the official files went on a hunger strike protesting that the government authorities have failed to trace his records. (H)

NARVEKAR FACTION FILES COMPLAINT: In a counter-attack, the Dayanand Narvekar faction in the Goa Cricket Association yesterday accused office bearers Pankaj Joshi and C Ashok of forgery, misappropriation, apart from flicking account books and documents from the association's office. (H)

GOVT ROLLS BACK: The BJP-led coalition government on Monday rolled back its controversial decision on public holidays and has retained all the holidays of 2002 for the next year. (H)

DEMAND FOR GKA CERTIFICATES: With the State government treating the certificate from the Goa Konkani Academy as the mandatory eligibility criteria for getting a government job, there has been an unexpected surge in the number of candidates wanting the certificates…The GKA chief, Pundalik N Naik, holds the opinion that those who have passed SSC or HSSC examination with Konkani should be exempted from the rule. MANHANDLING BY COP? In an incident of police high-handedness, one Pritam Parsekar of Simepaind, Mardol, was threatened of dire consequences by a staff member of the Mardol Police station when his only plea was to make a panchanama, after a truck loaded with steel bars went off the road and fell in his compound causing loss to his property. BLAZE IN PILERNE: Fibreglass packaging materials, wooden mould and other articles worth Rs.one lakh were gutted in a fire that broke out at a factory at Pilerne in the wee hours of December 9. (NT)

GARBAGE DUMP IN KURPEM OPPOSED: The Kurdi-Wadem Gram Sabha has passed a resolution to oppose the resolution taken by the Margao Municipal Council to dump the garbage on the government land at Kurpem ward of Kurdi Wadem village panchayat. (H)

PLASTIC FREE VILLAGE: The Navelim villagers yesterday resolved to strive to be a model village in the Sate in disposing of plastic garbage. (GT)

LOUD MUSIC: A restaurant owner, Ashish Udai Gupta, was arrested and freed on bail bond, for disturbing the public peace at Palolem beach, Canacona. Gupta of World Peace Restaurant was found playing loud music without the prior permission of the competent authority. (NT)

POLICE STATIONS WITHOUT CHIEF: Three out of four police stations in Salcete taluka are presently functioning sans the station incharge, a fact that has seen junior police offers being dispatched from Margao to man these stations. (H)

HOUSE BURGLED AT COLVA: The Colva police have registered an offence for the robbery committed at the residence of one Natalia Carvalho. She alleged that the culprits has made good their escape with gold ornaments and cash all worth Rs.26,000. (GT)

FALLOW FIELDS IN CURTORIM: Concerned over the paddy fields being kept fallow in Curtorimonce know as the granary of Salcetefarmers from the village have come together to revive the spirit of agricultures and ensure that no tillable lands in the village remain fallow.(H)

DISPLEASURE OVER TENANCY ACT: The Curtorim farmers' Union has expressed its displeasure over the Tenancy Act and its loopholes which has had an adverse effect over the Curtorim--Salcette's granary. (NT)

NO BUSINESS TRANSACTED: Courts in Panjim on December 9 wore a deserted look with the advocates abstaining from attending the courts as a protest against the extension of the subordinate court working hours which came into effect from the beginning of December. (H)

MOIRA CONSUMERS' MEET: Moira Civic and Consumer Forum will have its monthly general meeting of consumers at the Moira Club Hall on December 11 at 5.30 pm. DRINKING WATER PROBLEM IN PONSAMOLL: Villagers residing in Chiraband and Ponsamoll ward of Uguem village in Sanguem are facing acute drinking water problem for over 15 days now. (H)

SUGARCANE FARMERS IRKED: Sugarcane cultivators in the remote Wadem village in Sanguem taluka, which accounts for the production of 14,000 tonnes of sugarcane produce, are irked over the directives issued by the Sanjivani Sugar factory to harvest just 20 tonnes or four plots sugarcane produce per day. PANJIM CHURCH FEST: A large number of people from Panaji and surrounding areas yesterday participated in the annual feast of the Immaculate conception church in Panjim, with the parish priest, Fr Antimo Gomes, urging the congregation to strengthen the bond of unity and brotherhood. In the evening, the special feast mass was offered by "The Navhind Times", where Fr Gomes blessed the paper. The staff, besides many other well-wishers of the paper attended the mass. This was followed by fire-works display and brass band music. (NT)

ST XAVIER'S WORK: Goa University Vice Chancellor Dr PS Zacharias on Saturday stated that St Francis Xavier should be commended for his courage to travel in unknown places to spread his missionary message, unmindful of the type of people and their prevalent culture. He was addressing a gathering after inaugurating the two-day seminar on "In the footsteps of Francis Xavier: Jesuits in India" at Xavier Centre of Historical Research at Alto Porvorim. (H)

CHALLENGE TO MIRACLES: The members of the "Challenge to Miracles" yatra, organised by the Maharashtra Andhashradda Nirmulan Samiti, will hold a public meeting at the Lohia Maidan, Margao on December 14 at 4.30 pm, and perform practical demonstrations explaining the science behind so-called miracles. CHRISTMAS ALBUM RELEASED: FC Global Music, a music company floated by Felix Correia and Cyril Santamaria, have released their latest Christmas album titled "Christmas Classics". FC Global has plans to release Alfred Rose's "Golden Oldies Vol II" during the third week of January 2003. (H)
