CM HAILS BJP'S VICTORY: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar yesterday claimed that he was sure of success of the Bharatiya Janata Party in the Gujarat polls and stated that the people voted for the party inspite of wrong propaganda and lot of misinformation to the people. (GT)

EDUCATION'S LINKAGE WITH INDUSTRY: While most States in India are content to follow the national higher education policy, Goa has decided to formulate a State policy which will have a linkage with the industrial sector and give a direction to higher education taking into account the employment factor. GCA'S GENERAL BODY BACKS NARVEKAR: The general body meeting of Goa Cricket Association whilst adopting a resolution asking the police to stop registering cases against the managing committee and harassing the office-bearers and instead allow them to carry on with the promotion of the game and its day-to-day activities in peace, resolved that Rs.13,38,480 cash in hand and Rs.20 lakh advances shown in the balance sheet as on 31-3-2002 be written off with certain proviso. SEASON OF LOOTING THE KHAZANS: "The most important and exciting news for the past three weeks has been and in the next two weeks in the rural areas of Goa, in eight talukas having Khazan lands, would be the auctioning (Pavani) of the fishing rights of the sluice gates, locally known as manos. FISH THEME FOR R-DAY FLOAT: Goa fish will be the theme for the Goa tableau to be presented on the Republic Day at New Delhi on 26 January next year. The tableau will be presented by Sushant Khedekar and it will describe the lifestyles of Goan people dominating the trade, music and culture of the fishing people in the State. (GT)

POOR TELEVISION COVERAGE: "The television coverage of the ongoing National Football League has been disappointing. Once again the telecasting rights have been given to Doordarshan, which doesn't seem to know the basic requirements of a live telecast. The commentary is disappointing. WIFE COMMITS SUICIDE: Harshali Anata Usgaonkar, a 25-year-old woman of Velguem, who married about eight months ago, committed suicide by hanging to a tree in the bushes at Velguem yesterday. (GT)

HOTEL OWNERS MEET: With the beginning of the tourist season, the Colva police held a meeting of hotel owners, tour operators, shack owners and others. The meeting discussed several guidelines to be followed. (NT)

CHURCHILL TELLS CONG MLAS: Addressing a meeting in Cuncolim, former Benaulim MLA Churchill Alemao told the party MLAs not to be scared of the government or Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar. "If you are scared of the Chief Minister, then better resign and go home," the former MLA said. (H)

ONE COP FOR 2200 VEHICLES: For every 2200 vehicles, we have one policeman, which is very high as compared to the other metropolitan cities, opined Superintendent of Police (Traffic), Apa K Teli. However, the manpower sanctioned in 1984 to deal with 56,000 vehicles is the same to deal with 3,83,768 vehicles in 2001. (GT)

BOOK RELEASE: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar will release a book "Goa: Four decades of FreedomRedefining Horizons", published by the Department of Information and Publicity, at a function on December 18. The book has contributions from 19 subject-specialists, who cover a comprehensive range of topics on Goa. (H)

Santosh Binmole won 19-6 over Sushil Kumar of Chattisgarh while Devinder gill by 19-4 over sultan Ahmed. Vishwanath Govekar, bantam weight, won a hard fought bout over Teli Kai of Arunachal Pradesh.
