EMPLOYMENT SCHEME BY 2004: CM: The Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar, has said that his government would implement a major scheme 'Freedom from unemployment' within next two years. Mr Parrikar was speaking after unfurling the national tricolour at the state-level function to mark the 41st anniversary of Goa's liberation held at Campal Parade grounds yesterday. 'The freedom from unemployment" would ensure that the students emerging out of schools and colleges did not get frustrated due to lack of employment opportunities in the state. In this connection, the Chief Minister also mentioned that the Cyberage scheme would add to the growth potential of the students in Goa. Mr Parrikar opined that the quality of life still needs to be improved. Efforts in this direction have already been started, he said. He urged the people of Goa to cooperate with the government in the implementation of various schemes to take Goa on new heights of progress and prosperity. The Chief Minister's Police Medals were presented to Dy SP, Mr Jose Allen De Sa, police inspector, Mr S C Tavares, PI, Mr Dinraj Govenkar, PSI (wireless), Mr Dayanand Prabhugaonkar, head constable, Mr Pedro Antonio Fernandes, head constable, Mr Ganapati Bedrekar and constable, Mr Shankar Komarpant. MORE LIBERATION NEEDED: PALEKAR: Senior Communist leader and veteran trade unionist, Narayan Palekar stated that though Goa has been liberated from the clutches of the Portuguese regime, but it needs yet another liberation from the clutches of communal and saffron forces. Palekar was addressing the Liberation Utsav organised by the World Social Forum at the Azad Maidan on Liberation Day. Citizens groups, trade unions, NGOs, cultural troupes and social organisations took part in the Utsav. Stalls were put by Bailancho Saad, Peaceful Society, Goa Desc, Positive People, Rashtra Seva Dal, Other India Book Stall, Sanatan Sanstha and AITUC (Child Rights' Cell). The Liberation Utsav was attended by renowned Freedom fighters namely Shyamrao Madkaikar, Dada Dessai, Naguesh Karmali, Lybia Lobo Sardessai, Lambert Mascarenhas, Peter Alvares, Prabakhar Sinari, Dr Luiza Pereira, Ravindra Sirsat and Atmaram Sharma and six others from Jammu & Kashmir. Christopher Fonseca of WSF said that the Indian economy is now at the mercy of powerful, international manufacturers and service providers, resulting in the closure of many traditional industries in India. To combat this, Fonseca said, the World Social Forum was formed to ensure that people form the core of all human economic activities throughout the world. (GoaNOW)

NO NEED TO PANIC: ISRAELI CONSUL GENERAL: The Israeli Consul General, Dovsegev Steinberg, said that there was no need for panic and that the reports on the attack in Goa were just a general caution issued in the backdrop of attacks of Israeli nationals in Mombassa and Bali. The Consul said that Israel has communicated their concerns about the security of Israeli nationals in the light of the fact that they like to holiday in Goa, a very popular destination for young Israeli tourists. FACING TERROR THREATS: "Independent estimates reveal that there are over 2000 odd Israelis already in Goa. The Tourism department probably do not have a clue to the number of Israeli tourists actually in Goa because most of them stay in cheap accommodations. Moreover, the families in the Northern coastal belt, who hire out rooms to Israelis and other foreign tourists, tend to be very secretive and seldom report their presence to the authorities." PRESERVATION OF PUBLIC DOCUMENTS PLEA: The Panjim Bench of the Bombay High Court has admitted the petition filed by a couple of law students-- Shambhavi Desai and Prasheen Lotlikar of V M Salgaoncar College of Law--praying that important public documents such as those of births and deaths be sent to the archives for scientific and chemical treatment as these documents, especially from the years 1961 to 1970, are currently getting destroyed due to lack of preservation. The petitioners have also stated that the Panjim office of the Sub-Registrar is hopelessly inadequate for storage and preservation of important documents. (H)

COMPUTER LITERACY: The Minister for Information Technology, Mr Francisco D'Souza, said that a software technology park will be set up at Dona Paula, for which land has already been acquired, to promote IT sector in the state. Speaking after inaugurating an office of the Software Technology Park of India (STPI) at Capital House, Porvorim, yesterday, Mr D'Souza said Goa is one of the few states in India to achieve tremendous development in the IT sector and expected large investments in this sector in years to come. He further said, efforts are on to achieve cent percent computer literacy in the state. He said, 3,000, eleventh standard students in Science stream will be given computers this financial year and mentioned that, students of other streams will also be covered in phases. (NT)

CHARGES AGAINST THALI: In a legal notice sent to the Chief Secretary, Advocate Aires Rodrigues has urged the State to institute criminal proceedings against additional advocate general VP Thali for embezzlement of funds through excess billing and for breach of trust. (GT)

BURGLARIES IN ST INEZ: Two burglaries were reported at St Inez in the intervening night between Tuesday and Wednesday. The shops which were burgled belong to June Nunes and Shripad Salgaonkar at St Inez Park Plaza. (H)

BOOK ON GOA'S FREEDOM STRUGGLE: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Wednesday released "Redefining HorizonsGoa four decades of Freedom", a publication brought out by the Department of Information and Publicity and edited by Mario Cabral e Sa. (GT)

UPDATED TERMINOLOGIES NEEDED: Goa was liberated fourteen years after the independence of India, hence there is a great gap in the development of terminologies in Konkani as compared to its other sister languages including Marathi, and we are lagging behind in scientific and terminology, said Prof JS Budkuley, Register, Goa University. He was speaking at the valedictory function of a workshop on developing scientific and technical terminology. (GT)

SCIENCE CENTRE TO ATTRACT TOURISTS: The Minister for Town and Country Planning and Environment, Mr Atanasio Monserrate, said that the Goa Science Centre (GSC), apart from being an educational institution, is an asset for attracting tourists and making the public aware about the scientific facts. While speaking during the first anniversary of GSC, he observed that the visitors could also appreciate the picturesque background and eco-system outside the Centre, besides the high-tech facilities inside it. The director of National Institute of Oceanography (NIO), Goa and chairman of local advisory committee of GSC, Dr E Desa, stressed on the need to inform people about the Centre. (NT)

RIVER PRINCESS: The charterer of "MV River Princess" has been ordered to refloat and two away the vessel grounded off Candolim within 90 days. In an order passed on December 14, Director of Tourism, N Suryanarayana, has further directed Salgaocar Mining Industries Private Limited to submit a plan of action within 14 days. (GT)

STUCK FOR 30 HOURS: A 30-metre long trolley carrying a crane found it difficult to negotiate the sharp turn near Ribandar ferry point and remained stuck for about 30 hours, necessitating the traffic to be diverted along a narrow road. If the trolley had moved ahead, it would have crashed into the palatial house earlier belonging to Conde de Ribandar. (GT)

SEMINAR ON SPICE PRODUCTION: Starting from 10 am today Krishi Vigyan Kendra, in collaboration with the Directorate of aRecanut and Spices Development, Kerala, and Directorate of Agriculture, Goa, will organise a two-day seminar on spice production technology at ICAR Research Complex, Ela, Old Goa. CUPA VILLAGERS OPPOSE GARBAGE DUMPING: Margao Municipal Council seems to be heading for yet another fiasco with the commencement of floating of tenders for clearing the garbage lying dumped at Sonsodo. As planned, the garbage is to be excavated and transported to a quarry at Cupem in Rivona. However, the MCC authorities are likely to face heavy weather, as the Cupa villagers have decided at a gram sabha meeting against the dumping of the garbage. (GT)

TEXTBOOKS TO BE REPLACED: The NCERT textbooks of eighth, ninth and tenth standard in the State would be replaced with Maharashtra board books, the Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar, said on December 19. Terming the NCERT books as "not study but reference books", the Chief Minister said the replacement would be done in a phased manner. (NT)
