But why is Konkani suffering? The answer is simple. Konkani in Devnagiri script ( Hindu Brahmins are conversant with it) has been forced on the Catholic community (coversant with Roman script) in the belief that the pro Marathi Goans (mainly the non Brahmin Hindus ) would accept the same liberally as they were used to the devnagiri script. This has not happened and will never happen so long as Konkani in Devnagiri script is the monoply of the Hindu Brahmins. What has happened is that the Marathi schools are slowly but surely shutting down in favour of English Schools go to Pernem and see it. Konkani schools will vanish by the first half of this decade. English schools have mushroomed and shortly there will be kiosks (gaddos) imparting education in English- just watch out for them as the cyberage grips Goa. Hindu Brahmins are grabbing all the Government jobs followed by the non Goans. The other jobs assured in the name of Konkani to the Hindu Brhamins are tuitions or coaching classes or remedial classes call it by any name. So the Catholics and the Hindu non Brahmin class have been dealt with a severe blow by declaring Konkani in Devnagiri script as the sole official language. And mind you they are yet to develop a proper Konkani lexicon. Recently the certificates issued by one of the Konkani Institutes (run by Hindu Brahmins, with a few non Hindu Brahmins thrown in for good measure) as the only bonafide document to certify knowledge of Konkani for purposes of employment in Government has been discarded by the CM of Goa. Because it is a known fact that this certificate was benefiting only the Hindu Brahmins for jobs in Government. Of course the CM took this step so that he does not alienate his BJP party from the non Brahmin Hindus. Please remember that Konkani is written in Kanada Malayalam Tulu Urdu script in other States so why not Roman atleast for the first 10 years? Mr Bhembre is also indirectly responsible for brainwashing the Catholic Church to force the Diocesan Society of Education to accept Konkani as the medium of education in all primary schools by quoting various theories on the use of mother tongue as the media of the primary education. Fine but it could have been in Roman script. Or knowing full well the political overtones in the language issue could have permitted it only as one compulsory subject from primary to matriculation. The Catholic Chuirch in Goa is of an archaic mindset and not in touch with the day to happenings in Goa forget the world. Most of the ills of the Catholic Church is they only react when cajoled or coaxed by those that form the inner circle of the Church. Even the Archbishop who has retired in June 2002 on attaining the age of superannuation 75 years continues because the Vatican Council is yet to appoint his successor. Until fresh blood is inducted we are afraid we may have to witness the decadence of the Catholic Church while its flock are being threatened by numerous fundamentalist forces. How would Mr. Bhembre explain the use of English at the primary language by a school in Margao run by Hindu Brahmins? Does this not betray Mr Bhembre's efforts to reduce Catholics as second class citizens? The Konkani Porjecho Avaz was used only to whip up emotional sentiments and seek huge funds which the NRIs mainly the Catholic community contributed but what was the result Catholics? Gullible Catholics contributed to dig their own grave.
