ANCIENT DAM FOUND: An "engineering marvel", used perhaps during the
pre-Portuguese period, for water harvesting in Ibrampur, near Goa's border
with Maharashtra, had remained in the shadows till recently. Showing
damages of the hoary past and clandestine quarrying recently, this
structure, a mini-dam, barely seven metres long, appears to be a work of
careful planning in terms of its engineering aspects and brilliantly

ANCIENT IDOLS TOO: Chorla villagers in the Western Ghats have unearthed
some 25-30 unidentified stone idols while digging and collecting firewood
near the (Kalsa) dam site and the forest around it, said Mr Kiran Gawade, a
local leader. Mr Gawade claims that the villagers had hidden the idols with
the fear of they being smuggled out. Most of the idols are very old and
locals said they could not identify them. (NT)
"ESSENCE OF GOA": Besides human development, the primary focus of planning
in Goa will be on maintaining, preserving and protecting the "essence of
Goa" and on generating employment/livelihood for the people of Goa. This
was stressed at a brain storming session on Planning and Development in
Goa, held at the International Centre, Goa, on January 6. The government
has decided to involve students and elected representatives at the gram
panchayat and zilla levels to make the planning process a participatory

VOICE COURIER SERVICES: Idea Cellular Ltd, a leading mobile telephone
services provider in the country launched an innovative Voice Courier
Service on January 6 in partnership with Navin Mail Services (India) Pvt
Ltd, Mumbai. It will enable its subscribers to record and send voice
messages to friends and family members across India and in the USA and
Canada at a very nominal rate of Rs.2 per minute for national messages and
Rs.4 per minute for all international messages. (H)
VIRTUAL PRIVATE NETWORK: BSNL will launch nationwide state-of-the-art
virtual private network based on multi-protocol label switching within a
month, a top official said on January 6. (H)
BSNL TO CUT ITS RATES: Close on the heels of mobile operators slashing
their STD rates, State-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited is giving final
touches to its mobile and fixed phone STD rates that is expected to match
private cellular companies. (H)
INCREASE IN WORK HOURS FOR SCHOOLS: The state government seems inclined
towards accepting a recommendation from the Goa School Education Advisory
Board for introducing six-and-a-half working hours for middle and high
schools (STD V-XII) in the near future. This was indicated by the Chief
Minister Manohar Parrikar while briefing the press on January 6. (H)
NCERT SYLLABUS SCRAPPED: The government has decided to scrap the National
Council of Education Research and Training syllabus from next academic year
in a phased manner. The government took the decision to find a solution to
the matter in view of there being considerable opposition to the NCERT
syllabus, which had not found favour with the teachers and student

"OUR ILLUSTRIOUS PAST": The Governor, Mr Kidar Nath Sahani, said that there
is an urgent need to disburse information about the real culture, tradition
and history of Goa, not only before the tourists, but also to the world
community, and institutions like museums would go a long way in
accomplishing this task. While addressing a gathering on the occasion of
the inauguration of the Museum Week 2003, at the Goa State Museum, the
governor observed, "The notion that whatever this region possess is the
contribution of Portuguese must be wiped out from the sensibilities of the
people." "Goa's culture and tradition is far greater and richer than what
the colonial rulers have left behind," he stressed. (NT)
SKYBUS PROPOSAL SENT TO CENTRE: The Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar,
said on January 6 that the State government has already sent the primary
proposal to the Central government for further action in regard to
implementation of the skybus project. He said that the state government's
liability in the project was limited only to provide land for the project,
adding that land between four-lane national highway would be used for the
purpose. (NT)
GOA ASSEMBLY SESSION: The Goa legislative assembly would meet from February
7 for a weeklong session to commence with the traditional governor's
address to the House. (H)
SNAKES, INSECTS ADD TO WOES: Stray cattle and canines are not the only ones
posing danger to human beings, so it seems. Snakes, insects, bees, etc,
might prove equally or more dangerous too, taking humans to hospitals.
Statistics compiled at Hospicio hospital reveals that over 250 persons were
attacked either by snakes or insects while some received a terrible sting
or two from bees in the year gone by. Close to 200 persons from the
district (South) were bitten by snakes. (H)
BEST GROUP AT MANDO FESTIVAL: "Merxechim Sallkam" won the prestigious Mando
Award for the best group at the 36th Mando Festival organised by the Goa
Cultural and Social centre at the Kala Academy, Panjim, on January 4. The
first here prize in the traditional category were won by Curtorechim
Sallkam, Merxechim Sallkam and Fatordechim Fulam. (H)
DEVICE TO CLIMB COCONUT TREES: The agriculture department has introduced a
new implement to climb on the coconut trees mechanically to pluck the
coconuts easily. The implement has been devised by the Coconut Board of
Kerala and costs Rs.1100 per unit. (GT)
TWO ASSAULTED: One Anthony M Pereira from Assolna hit his brother Custodio
with a stick following a domestic fight on Monday. In a similar incident at
Cuncolim, one Yeshwant Narayan Lotlikar hit Gajanan Deu Kudalkar with a
stool for "parking his cycle in the middle of the pathway close to a

BABY FOUND: Ponda police found a newly born bay girl abandoned at Sapna
Park near Bethora village. The baby is admitted in GMC and is in a critical
condition. (H)
SARASWAT SAMAJ FOOD FEST: The Goa Saraswat Samaj is all set to present
mouthwatering delicacies at its third Saraswat Food Festival, which will be
held at the Kala Academy Complex from January 7 to 19. "We hope to attract
as many as 25,000 visitors this year," said Suresh Kudchadkar. (H)
"JAIL BHARO" CAMPAIGN: The National Platform of Mass Organisations Goa will
organise a day-long dharna followed by a "jail bharo" campaign on 8 January
to protest against the government's anti-labour policies, according to CPI

FATORPA ZATRA: The majestic Shree Shantadurga Kunkallikarin temple at
Fatorpa wears a festive look with the massive temple being fully
illuminated for the annual Jatrotsav' commencing today (January 7) at the
devasthan premises. Tomorrow the traditional procession of the deity on
"ambari" (elephant chariot) will take place which will be followed with a
procession of the deity on a "flower chariot" on 9 January. (GT)
SATPAL ARBORETUM: Glass houses, a shed house, an eco-friendly tunnel, a
drinking water shed, lawns, medicinal plantations and other ecological
wonders are tailor-made to fit into the tourist circuit. With this the
forest department has given a boost to the tourism circuit of
Bondla-Tambdi-Surla-Mollem by adding Satpal to it. (NT)
"KALA MANTHAN": An exhibition of beautiful paintings, drawings and
sculptures was inaugurated at the Kala Academy Art Gallery in Panjim on
January 5. The lovely works of young and talented artists Kranti V Chari,
Shilpa M Nachinolkar, Laxman Bhikaji Chari, Deepak Prakash Chari, Vinayak
Shantaram Chari, Rajmohan Ramnath Shetye, Vidhyadhar Vishwanath Chari and
Shubhangi Mohan Chari will be on view till January 9 from 10 am to 7 pm.
