Mr Chetan Acharya, a young cultural activist from Canacona, has been chosen the Working President of the Eighth Goa Yuva Mahotsav this year. Mr Acharya, living in Loliem village of Canacona taluka, is actively associated with 'Konkonchim Tarangam', the popular cultural association. Besides being an upcoming young entrepreneur, he is also actively involved in several social, cultural and literary activities in Canacona. The Eighth Goa Yuva Mahotsav of the Konkani Bhasha Mandal, to be held on 25 and 26 January in Curchorem, will be this time organised by 'Kaladarpan' of Curchorem. Mr Ramarao Desai, the Industries Minister, is the reception committee chairman of this most prestigious youth festival of the state. Mr Mangaldas Bhat, a youth activist from Curchorem, has been unanimously elected the Chief Co-ordinator of the festival while Ms Sobita Mauzo is the Secretary. The local youth are also in the process of appointing several committees to make the festival a success. The festival of performing art, which is designed in a most creative manner and basically depicts various facets of the Goan Identity, has been drawing thousands of students and youth from different higher secondary schools, colleges as well as villages and cities. In order to manage the increasing number every year, the Festival has now been restricted to limited number of competitions, divided equally between the educational institutions and the open groups. Accordingly, states a press note, only two competitions, Quiz and Mushtaiki, will be common for all. Competitions like Fatafat, Bonderam, Street Play, solo singing, Konkani Pop and Lok Mandd will be now restricted to the educational institutions. The open groups could however participate only in Patekar, Rangoli, Mime, Brekantar, Trio and Dhik Thai. With this exercise, the organisers expect to restrict each competition, which otherwise drags on for five hours each.
