PRESS RELEASE

Mr Chandrakant Barve, Station Director of Goa Doordarshan,
apologised in writing for a direct relay of a Maharashtra-based
programme by cancelling Goa slot and has assured not to repeat such
 mistake in future.

Around 40 activists of Goa Hit-Rakhan Manch today stormed the Goa
Doordarshan office and gheraod Mr Barve, protesting against showing
Maharashtra programmes during Konkani and Marathi slots allotted to
 Goa.

The Goa DD had shown live telecast of All India Marathi Literary
Conference held at Karhad in Maharashtra on 10 January, at the cost
of Konkani slot allotted to the local centre. The GHM was also
irked over telecasting Maharashtra's Marathi programmes during the
Marathi slot, rather than showing programmes of Goan artists
 performing in Marathi.

The activists entered Mr Barve's chamber today evening, breaking
security cordon, by shouting slogans against the DD Director and
demanding a full-fledged station for Goa. They argued for over 30
minutes with Mr Barve and warned him that the GHM will not tolerate
any step-motherly treatment meted out to Goa and Goan artists, at
the cost of Maharashtra or any other state.

The GHM also protested against not showing any such live telecasts
of major cultural or literary events taking place in Goa, which are
organised by Goans and giving step-motherly treatment to the
state's sole official language Konkani instead of promoting it.

Accordingly, Mr Barve assured to telecast such Goan events in future
by sending his team to the respective venues. The agitators however
refused his proposal to show Konkani programmes by cancelling the
Marathi slot meant for Goa. He later agreed to show such Goan
programmes in detail during the time, which is otherwise given for
the channels like Sahyadri of Maharashtra.
