----------------------------------------------------------------------- Documented by Goa Desc Documentation Service & circulated by Goa Civic & Consumer Action Network (GOA CAN)<[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Ph:2252660 ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------- Study tour on Mhadei ----------------------------------- A group of environmentalists recently organised a study tour for tracing the source and the route of River Mhadei, with an objective to study the river as well as the flora and fauna existing along its course.The first phase of the project which began in October, last year, was lead by Mr Prakash Paryekar and Mr Digambar Singbal. It included study of the river route from Usgaon to Sonal, in Sattari taluka. The second phase, which was recently undertaken had the participation of experts from various fields, including Mr Paryekar (nature and folk life), Mr Singbal (painter and photographer), Mr Nirmal Kulkarni (reptiles and wildlife photography), Mr Prasad Kashikar (environment in Sahyadri mountain range) and Mr Shrinivas Narayan (bird watching and study of insects), among others. The experts filmed the route of the river and also collected scientific data from the area. A number of reptiles, birds and butterflies belonging to different species were traced by the environmentalists, in addition to diverse specimen of stones, ore and herbs. Around 300 photographs were clicked and sketches of the places made during the tour. The group proposes to bring out a book about the data collected during the expedition. It will also hold performances of a special programme in different parts of Goa to spread an awareness about the river and its importance to the Goan environment. ------------------------------------ The Navhind TImes 14/1/03 ------------------------------------
