WHY NRIS ARE SORE: Goans cannot take too much cheer from the decision of the Centre to permit dual citizenship. This is because the beneficiaries of the new scheme are those who have accepted citizenship of the countries they have migrated to. The over-whelming majority of Goans abroad are in the Gulf. These countries do not permit even nationals of other countries, who have spent a lifetime there, to acquire citizenship. Another major category of Goan residents, who opted for Portuguese citizenship before or after Liberation, will also not get the benefit of dual citizenship. The over-whelming majority of Goans abroad come under the category of non-resident Indians. Unlike the people of Indian origin, who will now presumably get Indian passports in addition to the passports of the countries they have settled in, the non-residents will not be similarly blessed. DOOM FOR RIVERS? Use of outdated and cost-cutting methods in construction of bridges and gross negligence in ensuring clearance of sites after completion of some major projects may have adversely impacted the fragile riverine ecology in Goa.
