anniversary Mahotsav Asmitai by holding a public meeting at the Lohia

WHY NRIS ARE SORE: Goans cannot take too much cheer from the decision of
the Centre to permit dual citizenship. This is because the beneficiaries of
the new scheme are those who have accepted citizenship of the countries
they have migrated to. The over-whelming majority of Goans abroad are in
the Gulf. These countries do not permit even nationals of other countries,
who have spent a lifetime there, to acquire citizenship. Another major
category of Goan residents, who opted for Portuguese citizenship before or
after Liberation, will also not get the benefit of dual citizenship. The
over-whelming majority of Goans abroad come under the category of
non-resident Indians. Unlike the people of Indian origin, who will now
presumably get Indian passports in addition to the passports of the
countries they have settled in, the non-residents will not be similarly
blessed. (Edit in Herald)

truck-loads of waste from Sonsodo at the vacant area in front of the SGPDA
market facing the NH No.17 on January 13. (H)

Secretariat in Panaji came to a grinding halt for nearly half-an-hour on

Office by a cable laying agency. (NT)
MARGAO PLANNING LINKS WITH LISBON: Architectural features of Lisbon's
Municipal building and that of Margao Municipality may look alikereminding
one of the 450 years of links Portugal had with Goa. A little over forty
years of Liberation now and the cities of Lisbon and Margao are bracing up
to forge twinning links with each other covering various spheres. (H)
GOVT IS STABLE: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar yesterday (Jan 13) brushed
aside the possibility of a "political casualty" during his week-long
absence in the state. Replying to a barrage of questions from reporters on
rumours making rounds that there is a strong and fresh move to topple his
government during his absence, Parrikar ruled out such a possibility by
saying "all is well". (GT)

suicide by jumping into a well at Mardol in Ponda on 14 January. According
to the police, Gulab was mentally unsound. (GT)
DOOM FOR RIVERS? Use of outdated and cost-cutting methods in construction
of bridges and gross negligence in ensuring clearance of sites after
completion of some major projects may have adversely impacted the fragile
riverine ecology in Goa. While about seven major bridges interlinking
talukas have come up after liberation, most of them still have the
construction 'baggage', in the form or bunds and coffer dams and debris.
