OPINION POLL DAY: Goa would not have been a separate entity had it not been
for the decisive vote cast on January 16 thirty-seven years ago. Salcete
and Bardez were the main talukas, among others, which had contributed for
the victory over the issue of merging Goa with Maharashtra. This day will
be commemorated as "Asmitai Dis" in Margao (at Lohia Maidan at 4.30 pm) and
Chinchinim today with separate public meetings. (H)
HELMET RULE: The implementation of the helmet rule, which was to commence
on January 20, has been deferred. Stating this, the Transport Minister,
Pandurang Madkaikar, gave an assurance to a delegation of Motorcycle Action
Group (MAG) that a "proper decision" would be taken only after consulting
all concerned. In view of the minister's assurance, MAG has suspended the
agitation scheduled to commence from January 19. (H)
"PEACEFUL GOANS CAN ALSO BE BALLS OF FIRE": Mohandas Surlakar, former
principal and an office bearer of Gomantak Rashtrabhasha Sabha, said that
if one's identity is lost everything is lost and our cultural identity is
founded on our mother tongue Konkani which should be nurtured and enriched.
Surlakar was speaking as chief guest at the Asmitai Utsav at Bicholim on
Sunday. Warning that peaceful Goans can also be balls of fire, Uday
Bhembre, president of Asmitai Pratishthan, said that Goans love all the
languages but henceforth they will not tolerate any attempt to belittle
their mother tongue or the culture founded on it. (GT)

ELDERLY LANDLADY KILLED IN ASHVEM: A 65-year-old woman, Regina Josephine
Fernandes, from Ashvem-Mandrem is believed to have been murdered by an
unidentified Indian tourist outside her guest house on Ashvem beach on
Tuesday evening. Regina was alone in the house, which is close to her
"Regina Guest House'. (H)
1 DIES IN MISHAP: Mr Shankar Vinayak Shinde (41) died on the spot at
Velgem, Bicholim, when a truck bearing proceeding towards Amona, dashed
against him yesterday. (NT)
DOWRY SHARKS IN POLICE NET: Pernem police arrested six member of a family
on a complaint filed by one Pragati Mandrekar from Vaidongor-Parse, for
alleged dowry harassment. However, they ere later released on bail. The
husband of the complainant, who is the main accused, is still absconding. (GT)
DROWNED: A resident of Piligao, Mr Pundalik Datta Chopdekar (46), died due
to drowning at Sarmanas, Bicholim. (NT)
DOCUMENTS TO BE TRANSFERRED TO ARCHIVES: Documents such as births and
deaths, all registration instruments and notarial registers prior to 1977
lying with the taluka Sub-Registrars are to be finally transferred to the
Director of Archives forthwith. (H)
AUTONOMY TO COLLEGES: The government appears to be little wary about
allowing colleges, academic and administrative autonomy or that's the
impression it has given for the long delay in deciding on the subjecta
concept which promises to improve the standard of education at college

SHIV SENA FOR ACTION AGAINST ISRAELIS IN ANJUNA: Goa Shiv Sena chief,
Sanjay Harmalkar, has called upon the state government to take stringent
action against the Israelis on Anjuna and Vagator beaches who harass,
assault and prohibit local tourists from entering the beaches. Addressing a
press conference at Mapusa on Tuesday, the Sena chief stated that
foreigners on these beaches have been threatening local tourists. He
alleged that one Israeli tourist was involved in an assault on media
photographer Nitin Rai. (GT)
WHAT AILS KIDNEYS IN CANACONA? A team of doctors from the Goa Medical
College Hospital, Bambolim, in association with the National Institute of
Occupational Health, Gujarat, will make a comparative study of the high
incidence of kidney disease in the Canacona taluka with that of rest of
Goa. The research work is likely to start next month. (GT)
FACE-LIFT FOR FORT AGUADA: For Aguada, the one and only for which is under
the purview of the Archaeological Survey of India, mini circle Goa, is in
the process of getting a much-needed face-lift. The entire restoration work
of the upper fort is estimated to cost Rs.7-8 lakh. (H)
"KONKNNI" RELEASED: A special issue called "Konknni" of Konkani Bhasha
Mandal was released recently and is priced at Rs.50. (GT)
SARASWAT FOOD FESTIVAL: Goa Saraswat Samaj will hold its third Saraswat
food festival from January 17 to 19 at the Kala Academy Complex.
'ASMITAI" AWARD FOR FR PEREIRA: Fr Antonio Pereira, sj, was presented the
"Asmitai Puraskar 2003", at a special function held at Bicholim municipal
hall recently. The award comprises of Rs.10,000 cash, a maanpatra and a
shawl. Fr Pereira thanked the organisers for felicitating him. He appealed
to the Konkani writers, youth and others for following the principles of
late Shenoi Goembab and keep themselves on toes for progress of Konkani

BL JOSEPH VAZ FEAST: The feast of Blessed Joseph Vaz, the patrol of Goa and
apostle of Sri Lanka, will be celebrated in the newly built Sanctuary at
Sancoale on January 16. Thousands of devotees attend the celebrations every
