"OPINION POLL GAVE SELF-RESPECT TO GOANS": The "Asmitai Dis" commemorated
on the occasion of the historic Opinion Poll Day at Lohia Maidan in Margao,
sent a message loud and clear that Goans will no longer tolerate any insult
or attempts to undermine Konkani language, Goan identity and culture. Noted
Konkani writer, Uday Bhembre, went a step further by warning those who
insult Konkani and identity to prepare to face serious consequences.
Speakers lashed out at the recent attempts made by the Marathi chauvinists
to undermine "our language" at the All India Marathi Sammelan held at
Karad-Maharashtra by calling Konkani a dialect. Goans had decided 36 years
ago through the historic Opinion Poll that we want to preserve our separate
language and identity," thundered Konkani writer, Pundalik Naik, who had
led the Konkani movement for the official language status. (H)
A DEADLY SIP: An aquaculture student from Bhopal accidentally swallowed
acid when he took a sip from a bottle that he thought contained water and
succumbed to his injuries yesterday. 22-year-old Amlan Kanti Maity, a
native of West Bengal, was studying at Bhopal and was in Goa as part of a
field trip to study the State's fishing industry. (GT)

ABSENTEEISM IN GOVT DEPT: Water Resources Minister Philip Neri Rodrigues on
Monday paid a surprise visit to the Irrigation Department housed at Pajimol
in Sanguem and also the Water Resources Dept. Rodrigues was surprised and
upset to find most of the officials either coming late to the office or not
reporting to the duty, but signing the muster roll regularly and drawing
their salaries. (H)
RS.15 CRORE FLOWER BUSINESS: Although flowers worth Rs.15 crore are
imported into Goa from other states each year, the State government does
not earn a single rupee from this blossoming industry. Director for
Agriculture, VM Khade, said that his department was contemplating
introduction of a cess on the import of flowers into the State, on the
lines of the cess levied on milk which is brought in from neighbouring

REGISTRATION PLATES: The proposed introduction of high security
registration plates on vehicles all over the country from 28 February this
year, will be deferred for at least six months as several states and Union
Territories have expressed their inability to implement the same. (GT)
TOURISM DEPT, SHACK OWNERS LOCK HORNS: While both, the tourism department
and the shack owners, sincerely wish to boost tourism in Goa, their
constant battle over the modalities is not helping their cause. Continuing
is drive against illegal shacks and illegal sun beds, the Tourism
department yesterday raided Coco Beach, Nerul, demanding shack owners pay
the fines or remove the shacks and sun beds. "Te dhondoch korunk dina amkam
(They won't allow us to do any business)," cried a frustrated shack owners.

RANE CRITICISED: The Opposition leader, Pratapsing Rane, came under severe
criticism from the executive members of the Goa Pradesh Congress Committee

ARRESTED FOR AUDIO PIRACY: Margao police arrested one Allan D'Costa under
the Copyrights Act following a complaint by one Shankar Kadlak of Indian

FOUR BURGLARIES IN CANACONA: Areas in and around Canacona town were rocked
by a series of burglaries sometime between Wednesday night and early
Thursday morning, when burglars broke open the shutters of four shops and
decamped with cash and items worth Rs.18,600. (H)
PLANS TO INCREASE CASHEW PRODUCTION: The chairman of the Goa Forest
Development Corporation Ltd, Mr Narahari Haldankar, said that the
corporation would use grafting techniques for cashew plants to raise the
productivity from the present 500 gms per tree per year to 6 kg. (NT)
SCHEME TO PROTECT KHAZANS: Agriculture Minister Dayanand Mandrekar
yesterday stated that the scheme to protect khazan lands and paddy fields
by giving relaxation to the pattern of assistance, has been finalised and
would be made operation from 1 February this year. (GT)
MISMANAGEMENT OF BEACHES: "Every year, a number of schools from Goa used to
take their children to Palolem beach for a picnic but presently even the
Goan school children are deprived of enjoying the scenic beauty of beaches
in the name of tourism. The Palolem beach is very narrow as the distance
between the waterline and the high tide line is hardly about 30 to 35
meters. All along the high tide line, there are clusters of shacks and
cottages on this narrow sand belt restricting the free movement of locals,

PROPERTY GUTTED: A house belonging to Mario Carvalho caught fire on
Thursday afternoon in Margao, causing an estimated loss of Rs.20,000. (H)
BUREAUCRATS CALL THE SHOTS: One of the major disadvantages of an
excessively media-friendly chief minister was at display at two press
conferences organised by two BJP MLAs on January 16. The duo, Deputy
Speaker Narahari Haldankar and Agriculture Minister Dayanand Mandrekar were
reduced to 'virtual nobodies' while addressing presspersons, embarrassingly
ill-equipped to handle most questions thrown at them. This was incidentally
the first press conference held by either the Valpoi or the Siolim MLA. (H)
SHIFTING OF WASTE FROM SONSODO: Amidst bedlam and uproar, the BJP-ruled
Margao Municipal Council bulldozed its way when it approved a proposal to
arm the chief officer with powers to decide on the Sonsodo waste shifting
operations at Thursday's special meeting. (H)
SLEEPER BERTH BUSES: The Transport Minister, Mr Pandurang Madkaikar, has
urged the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways to frame uniform
specifications for the tourist buses having sleeper berths. Mr Madkaikar
pointed out at the 30 th meeting of Transport Development Council in New
Delhi that there is no uniformity in body building and also that there are
no norms regarding minimum acceptable level of passenger safety and
comforts for such buses, operating on Goa-Mumbai, Goa-Bangalore and
Goa-Hyderabad routes. (H)
"ASMITAI UTSAV" AT PILAR: Fr Agnel's college, Pilar, will organise "Asmitai
Utsav", an one-day youth festival for higher secondaries, colleges and
youth organisations of Tiswadi on January 18 at Fr Agnel College, Pilar. (H)
GOA KITE CARNIVAL: International kite fliers from several countries would
arrive in Goa to participate in a two-day "Goa kite carnival", beginning
from January 18 at Vagator beach. Kite-flying is a common feature in North
Indian states during the Makar Sankranti and the event is first time being
promoted in Goa by the Nobad Travel and Nomad Heritage Trust in association
with the Goa Tourism Development Corporation. (NT)
DUTCHMAN AS PM'S FLAG BEARER: Dutch sailor, Lodewyk Brust, who is
captaining the yacht "Mistral", is likely to become Panjim Municipal
Council's flag bearer across the oceans. Sixty-three-year-old Brust started
his voyage more than 12 years ago and is accompanied only by his dog Lloyd
and cat Tiger, and is currently docked at the Captain of Ports Jetty in
Panjim. According to sources PMC Chief Officer Sanjit Rodrigues decided to
appoint Brust as the council's unofficial ambassador to the world after
"Weekender" published the Dutchman's story. (GT)
