FONTAINHAS FESTIVAL TAKES OFF TODAY: The Fontainhas ward in Panjim's celebrated Latin Quarter wears a totally new, lovely and utterly festive look. The Goa Heritage Action Group, funded by the Goa government and the partnered by the Panjim Municipal Corporation, has worked up the magical change. Banners, colourful paper lanterns and buntings flying high. The heritage houses painted, the sidewalks cleaned, repaired, streamlined. Till late last night everyone was busy�the various artists setting up their pads in the private houses allotted to them for the festival period. The longest banner, of course, is at Rajan Fulari's Art Installation at the Lima House. Rajan and Apurva Kulkarni have pioneered the Art Installation scene in Goa, and both are participating in the Festival, which will be inaugurated today (January 24) at 8.00 pm by Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar. Noted musicians like Lucio Miranda, Remo Fernandes, Bondo and Chote Rehmat Khan will entertain the audience on the occasion and Alexyz will release a commemorative Fontainhas tile. (GoaNOW)

MULTI-FACETED POLARISATION: That the language controversy has polarized the Marathi and Konkani linguistic schools of thoughts comes as no surprise. It is the multi-faceted polarization in the already fragmented Opposition on this particular issue, which makes for news today. (H)

GUTKA BANNED: In the interest of public health, the state government has prohibited the manufacture, distribution and sale of Gutka Pan Masala with or without tobacco in Goa from 26 January 2003. (GT)

CURBS ON KHAZAN LANDS: With the Salcete revenue authorities tightening the screws this season, the tenants associations of khazan lands along the Loutulim-Raia-Rachol-Curtorim belt, have begun to feel the heat now. Auctioning of fishing rights, the main revenue-generating source for the associations, has not been conducted by most of these tenants' bodies till date. (H)

PLASTIC WASTE: "This is God's gift. I did not have money to buy food for my children but God has provided!" The 'windfall" for this unnamed woman from Bihar came in the form of the form of the Panjim Municipal Council's PET bottle collection scheme. The scheme was an instant success. (GT)

FINED FOR USING FOOD COLOUR: Taking heed of a complaint filed by Food and Drugs inspector against a city hotelier in Panaji who added colour to Biryani, the Bombay High Court at Goa upheld a conviction order of the lower court and passed an order directing the hotelier to pay a fine of Rs.7,000. MAN FALLS INTO WELL: A 43-year-old man from Khadpabandh-Ponda, Shankar Bhika Naik, died after accidentally falling into a well at Sadar-Tisk on Friday morning. (H)

MAUVIN'S PLEA OPPOSED: The State has opposed the application for discharge of Mauvin Godinho, former power minister, in the disproportionate assets case, stating that there "is material evidence on record against him". (H)

KTC TRAINS A BOON OR BANE? KRC trains might be a boon to interstate travellers, but it is surely a bane to intra-state commuters. On an average railway crossings are blocked for road traffic very frequently, which causes traffic congestion and chaos specially in Margao. (GT)

BARGE HITS TRAWLER: Three of five crew members of a fishing trawler were rescued when their boat was hit by a barge off the Fort Aguada lighthouse at 4 am on January 24. The crew members Anthony, Francis and Shankar managed to stay afloat with the help of empty cans until 8 am when they were picked up by a trawler from Vasco. (GT)

3 INJURED: Kapil Bhatt (18) of Khorlim, Ashok Aangdi (25) of Pedem and Valentino Fernandes (20) were injured in a collision between a scooter, motorcycle and a jeep at a four-road unction at Ansabhatt, Mapusa, yesterday evening. (NT)

SPEAK OUT FOR GOA: "If the Marathi and the Maharashtrawadis have their way it will be the Konkaniwadis to blame. The Konkaniwadis seem to be totally oblivious to the fresh threat posed by the proposed Konkani Marathi Sahitya Sammelan to be held in Goa. The whole objective of this meet is to malign Konkani and conspire to secure equal official languages status for Marathi." (Edit in Herald)

"NOT POLITICAL": Former Union minister, Mr Ramakant Khalap, yesterday deplored the attempt by a few people to give 'political colour' to the three-day 8 th Konkan Marathi Sahitya Sammelan and asserted that it was a literary conference and had nothing to do with politics. (NT)

GSCB ELECTIONS: A fierce battle is on the cards between Vistar floated by the ruling BJP and Shahakar Panel of the Opposition, for the Goa State Co-operative Bank elections scheduled for Saturday. (H)

"RIVER PRINCESS": Global tenders have been invited for refloating and towing away the vessel "River Princess", grounded off Sinquerim coast for the last two-and-a-half years. (H)

PARRIKAR RETURNS: The Chief Minister, Manohar Parrikar, returned from his visit to the US on Friday. Parrikar along with Development Commissioner, Vijay Madan, visited the Silicon valley on an invitation from an organisation of IITians from India. (H)

STAGE SET FOR GOA YUVA MAHOTSAV: The state is set for the 8 th two-day Goa Yuva Mahotsav (Goa Youth Festival) organised by Konkani Bhasha Mandal and Kaladarpan, Curchorem, to be inaugurated by Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar at 9.30 am on Saturday (Jan 25) at the Government Sports Complex, Curchorem.
