Dr. Kalpana Chawla

Forty-one-year-old Chawla graduated from Tagore School, Karnal, India, in 1976. She received her B.Sc. in aeronautical engineering from Punjab Engineering College, India, in 1982 and her Master's of Science in aerospace engineering from University of Texas in 1984. This was followed by a PhD in aerospace engineering from University of Colorado, 1988.

Chawla's love of flying led to her career as an astronaut. She was one of more than 2,000 applicants for a civilian scientist's position on Columbia's voyage. According to NASA her academic accomplishments, intense physical fitness and experience as a pilot made her a natural choice.

Columbia was Chawla's second voyage into space. Previously, she had logged more than 375 hours in space and was the prime robotic arm operator on a shuttle flight in 1997.
