I've always sworn I'd never come to Goa, because every traveller in India
comes to Goa, but here I am with my partner, Naomi, and our two children.

Already we are big Goa fans. We eat mostly at the restaurant, Rockit, which
is connected to the bungalows where we are staying. It is owned by Clem
Fernandes, and the bungalows are owned by his brother, Agnel.

We really like Clem. He's 23, full of energy and good humour and very
enterprising. He grew up in the fishing village just behind the beach. His
mother helps keep things running at the restaurant and his sister and
younger brother help, too.

Goa is not what I expected. The Goa I expected was based on its reputation
for all-night raves, hashish at every table, loud music and foreigners doing
crazy things. But here on Palolem Beach, life's not at all this way. Sure,
the beach is filled with foreigners wealthy enough to come all the way
around the world to sit on a beach, but the beach is still very much a Goan
beach, an Indian beach.

Receipe for Shrimp-Tomato Curry. In this quickly assembled curry (it takes
20 to 25 minutes from start to finish), tomatoes and fresh coriander leaves
blend with chiles, ginger, onion and garlic to make a complex-tasting sauce
for fresh shrimp, smoothed and enriched with coconut milk.
