Tivolem Recipient of the 1998, Milkweed Prize, Awardee of the New York Foundation for the Arts fellowship in Fiction, former music Director of the Beethoven Society of New York, the 77 year old, Dr. Victor Rangel Rebeiro, author of the internationally acclaimed novel TIVOLEM, was invited by the English Department of St. Xavier's College, Mapusa, for an interaction session with the students of literature, on the 31st of January, 2003. After a brief introduction by Ms. Kshipra Vora, Mr. Rebeiro began the session with an inspiring account of his early struggles as a writer in America. His simplicity, warmth and cheerful disposition instantly bridged the generation gap, as he enthralled the gathering with humorous anecdotes and handy tips for young aspiring writers. A quick practical exercise in writing a short story revealed the interesting dynamics behind creative writing. The writer pointed out that though TIVOLEM could easily be mistaken for a typical goan village, it possessed the magical ability to appeal to the sensibility of a reader anywhere in the world. To be a good writer, Mr. Rebeiro advised, one should tap into ones childhood memories, which are a rich storehouse of characters and experiences. The session included a brief discussion on aspects of the novel itself further revealing the writers true talent and sharp wit. For a writer of his stature and experience, Mr. Rangel Rebeiro came across as extremely down-to-earth, young at heart and a proud son of the Goan soil. The Principal, Staff and students present expressed their gratitude for this rare and memorable encounter with the writer himself - a man whose philosophy of life, as he so succinctly put it (and which pervades his novel Tivolem) is : 'use the tide, don't fight it or go against it'. He also introduced the students to short story writing and conducted a practical session. _______________________________________________ Goanet mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.goanet.org/mailman/listinfo/goanet
