MICCKY STOPS 'DUMPING': Day two of Margao Municipal's waste dumping operations from Sonsodo to the proposed wholesale fish market evoked protests from some residents of Maddel in Margao prompting Tourism Minister, Mickky Pacheco to order stoppage of work in the morning while the police arrested Councillor Tadev Dias for leading the agitators. The protestors took the MMC officials by surprise when they forcefully unloaded waste from a tuck right in the middle of the Margao-Seraulim road. (H)

DOLPHINS FACE THREAT: Dolphin sightings along the Northern belt of Goa's coastline, which had come alive as a tourist attraction, now seems to be a matter of concern with dolphin deaths reportedly increasing. According to villagers of the Nerul and Candolim coastal belt, dolphin corpses washed ashore indicate that the same have succumbed to injuries. The main problem, they fear, lies in the fact that activities such as adventure-related dolphin trips, boating activities and fishing on an unprecedented level could be affecting the dolphin habitat along this coastline. AIRPORT AT MOPA: The state government on Thursday issued a notification intending to acquire more than one crore square metres of land for the proposed international airport at Mopa in the Pernem taluka. This is considered to be the largest land acquisition proposed by the government for a public project in recent years. There was a long delay in initiating the process of land acquisition though the Centre had given its green signal three years ago. (H)

ALLOCATION FOR PANCHAYATS: The State government should hike the budgetary share for the panchayat sector from the present 3 per cent besides routing grants for gram panchayats through zilla panchayats, these were some of the suggestions made by various panchayat leaders at a seminar on "Goa Vision 2020: Planning and Development and Role of Panchayats" held in Panaji on February 19. MARGAO'S PARKING WOES: The Urban Development Minister, Digambar Kamat acknowledges the magnitude of the problem, while the Margao Municipal Chief Officer concedes that the issue requires an immediate solution. But how and when will Margao's acute parking problem finally find an answer is a question dogging the motorists and pedestrians alike, what with the situation turning worse with each passing day. 20,000 RECORD BOOKS: The State Archives and Archaeology Department, which has a huge treasury of 3 lakh volumes comprising 10 crore folios, has been entrusted around 20,000 record books (of births, deaths, marriages, land registration and other records from the Registrar's office in eleven talukas) for preservation and maintenance. SUGGESTIONS ON PANAJI CORPORATION: In an exercise aimed at notifying areas for inclusion in the limits of the Municipal Corporation of Panaji, the government has invited suggestions and or views from members of public, in writing, addressed to the municipal administration director and ex-officio joint secretary to the government, within 15 days from February 14. RS.2 LAKH SEIZED FROM ASTROLOGER: An alleged astrologers, swamiji Kishore Shastri, claiming to be in possession of divine powers, was arrested on February 19 by the Panaji police and a sum of Rs.2.02 lakh was seized from his room. The police officials have appealed to the Goans not to fall prey to such astrologers and swamis misusing the religious ethics. (NT)

SCRIBE THREATENED: Frederick Rebello, a Canacona-based correspondent of a local daily, has filed a police complaint alleging that he received a number of threatening phone calls last week. Frederick alleged that an unknown called made the calls to his office and residence after he reported that large amounts of illegal timber was being transported by boat from Canacona to Karwar. (GT)

PARRIKAR ADVISES POLITICIANS: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has advised politicians to emulate the principles of Chatrapati Shivaji, to ensure that the State can prosper in all sectors. The chief minister was addressing a state-level function at Farmagudi-Ponda on February 19, to mark the 372 nd Shivaji Jayanti celebrations in the State. (H)

MARKET SITES AT CANSAULIM, CORTALIM: On February 19, the Chief Minister visited the sites for the modern market complexes in Cansaulim and Cortalim along with Cortalim MLA Matanhy Saldanha and IDC engineers. At Cansaulim, the Chief Minister directed the authorities to ensure the plinth level of the market gets ready before the onset of monsoons. (H)

"BIG BOSS" EXPORTED TO UAE: Madame Rosa Distillery, the leading distillers and bottlers of the Goan spirit (fenny), have now exported their leading brand Big Boos and Serenade to UAE agents. Madame Rosa distillery has been aggressively promoting their brands and the Goan spirit around the globe as an acquavitae as well as a cocktail base. (GT)

MAPUSA CITIZENS' FORUM: The Mapusa Citizens Forum will have its formal inauguration ceremony on February 22 at the Mapusa Municipal council hall in the presence of the Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar. (NT)

DR PUNDALIK GAITONDE DAY: The "Dr Pundalik Gaitonde Din" was observed on February 17 at Palolem, Canacona, to commemorate the arrest of Gaitonde by the Portuguese on February 17, 1954. In his speech, chief guest Brigadier Dr Gokuldas Bhangi claimed that Goa could be an ideal place for medical facilities, currently available in Mumbai and Chennai. (H)

FALEIRO DEMANDS FREE EDUCATION: In a special mention in the Rajya Sabha on February 19, Eduardo Faleiro (Congress) demanded immediate implementation of the 93 rd Constitutional Amendment Act meant to provide free and compulsory education to all children from age six to 14 years. (GT)

FESTIVAL AT TAMBDI-SURLA: The Directorate of Art and Culture, Panaji, will be organizing Fugadi-Dhalo festival at Shri Mahadev Temple, Tambdi-Surla, Sanguem-Goa on March 8, from 10.30 am onwards to promote and develop the traditional art. (GT)
MOBILE PHONE THEFT: Cuncolim police arrested two persons n connection with the theft of a mobile phone belonging to one Jilla Teles, resident of Chinchinim. (H)

LADY SUCCUMBS: Kala Amonkar, a 32-year-old spinster from Betim, succumbed to burn injuries at the Goa Medical College on February 19. The clothes of Kala had caught fire as she was lighting firewood for cooking on February 15.

DANIEL ELECTED: Daniel D'Souza has been elected unopposed as sarpanch of Arambol village panchayat on February 18. (H)

FOLK FESTIVAL: A national level "Lokotsav 03" (folk festival) will be organized by the Directorate of Art and Culture, Government of Goa, in collaboration with West zone Cultural Centre, Udaipur, and Kala Academy, for 8 days from March 3 to 10, at the Kala Academy Campus at Campal, Panjim. (H)

LOCAL YOUTH INTERESTS FIRST: "To the best of my knowledge, no exercise has ever been carried out either by the Government or by any NGO to identify industries where Goans could be employed as against those in which Goans may have no interest. Nor are there any reports that Government have rejected industry on grounds of unsuitability to the Goan job-hunters. What we have with us today are hunches and gut feelings about what Goans like and what they don't.
