INDO-AMERICAN TIMES February 21, 2003, Boston, MA Ahmedabad: SUNITA LYN WILLIAMS happens to be the second woman selected by NASA for its space research mission. Sunita, another American astronaut with Indian roots, has been selected for a space mission by NASA after Kalpana Chawla. Her selection comes after the death of Kalpana Chawla, mission specialist of Columbia which crashed just 16 minutes before reaching its earth destination. A graduate of the US Naval Academy, 37 year old Sunita Williams has been a Helicopter Pilot, Test Pilot and a Test Pilot Instructor. A first-time flier, Lieutenant Commander Williams will train as SPace Station Flight Engineer. Her parents Deepak Pandya and Ursaline Pandya live in Falmouth, Massachusetts and she is married to Michael Williams. Lt. Williams with over 2300 hrs of flight experience has been awarded to US Navy Commendation Medals, Navy and Marine Corps acheivement Medals and seveal other service awards for her accomplishments. The great honor to work with NASA got Sunita to Boston USA. Though she has been born and brought up in USA, she originally is an Indian and a native of Jhulasan Village in Mehsana district of Gujarat. Her father, Dipakbhai Pandya, left Jhulasan in 1960 for USA and married to American Ursaline. Their first child is Sunita herself. Jashodaben Rawal, Sunita's sister-in-law, said, "It is really a nice experience being with Sunita. Whenever I go to US, she will always like to sleep with me. She likes bedmi, dal, bhat, dhokla, sukhsndi, and papad to eat. She is a very family loving person. "Dinesh Rawal, Sunita's cousin said "Sunita is a very good person. I am going on the space with a mission. I am working on a theme to create on earth - like planet in space. The bold and adventerous girl has grown to a personality to whom the whole world will look at with lots of wishes to make Kalpana's dream of space experiments come true.
