Dear Friends Please be informed that Ms. Sunita Lyn Williams was NOT selected after the death of Astronaut Kalpana Harrison (nee Chawla). Ms. Williams was selected as an Astronaut Candidate by NASA in June 1998. She reported for training in NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas in August, 1998. Upon her successful completion of the 12-month training program, she became a NASA Astronaut in August 1999. The late Astronaut Kalpana Harrison was born in India of Indian parents and was a native of Hariyana, India before she went to and finally settled in the US. Ms. Williams was born in the US of an Indian father and an American mother and was brought up in the US, thus qualifying her as an US-born American with Indian ancestry. Therefore it becomes questionable to say, "she originally is an Indian and a native of Jhulasan Village in Mehsana district of Gujarat." Thank you very much. Asit K.
