EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE AND QUALITY OF LIFE "Emotional Intelligence refers to emotional responsibility" said Dr. Philip Mathew, Consultant Psychologist from Pune at the two days seminar organised by the Under-Graduate and Post-Graduate Department of Psychology St. Xavier's College, Goa under the Subject Update programme on the 15th and 16th February,2003. The seminar focussed emotional intelligence and quality of life, emphasizing the applications of emotional intelligence at home, school and workplace. In the inaugral session Prof. Newman Fernandes, the Principal and Head of Dept. of Psychology welcomed the gathering, highlighting the importance of this topic in our present day setting, since it will help the participants to realise how important it is to manage one's emotions to lead a successful and happy life. The Chief uest for the inaugral Mr. D.M. Deshpande, Principal of Saraswat College, lit the traditional lamp and declared the seminar open. He stressed on how important it is to manage one's self emotions for self-development and development of others, specially in this competitive world. The key note speaker Dr. Philip Mathew Consultant Psychologist - Pragati Learning Systems (P) Ltd., Pune, in his exposition of the topic mentioned four reasons why we should consider Emotional Intelligence: a) Emotions have the potential to unite and connect us. b) Emotions can be destructive. c) Emotions can be contagious d) Emotions make a difference in performance. Therefore it is important to know what you feel and what others feel. One needs to deal with other human beings affectionately. Dr. B.R. Shejwal, Associate Proffessor, Dept of Psychology, University of Pune, in his deliberation focussed on the idea that we need to knowourselves and the knowledge of the selfcomes from the selfand from people around the self. As parents and adults, we first need to understand our needs and then learn to listen to our child's needs, help the child to be assertive, allow the child to express his/her feelings of emotions and learn to identify the emotions expressed by the child. At school, teachers need to realise that the child has a need to relate to them. a teacher also needs to understand and communicate her expectations to the students without making them upset, respecting the child's views and generating suggestions and solutions if possible together. Dr. Shejwal put down 5 guidelines to E.Q. namely Self-motivation , Self-awareness, Self-control, Empathy and Communication Skills. The second day programme conducted by Dr. Philip Mathew, with introspection. "I would be more effective if _______________". He helped the participants to look at things which are within one's sphere and not to worry about things which are outside one's control. Self realisation is hindered only because we don't allow our self, make a mistake. I should not, I must, I ought, these type of dispositions don't help us to progress. We need to work hard, prepare ourselves for the occasion but if we don't achieve the best, its okay. One can never be sure that he /she will be always first. Setting realistic goals and moving up the ladder step by step is important for the productivity ofa firm/institution. In the post lunch session, the speaker placed some norms that would regulate emotions like caring, creating resources for working with emotions, also creating an affirmative environment, being open to suggestions, making team evaluation and confronting situations with the help of a workshop. The two day seminar came to an end with Mr. Nutankumar Thingujam (Faculty member of the P.G. Department) and co-ordinator of the seminar presenting a summary of the two-day deliberation. He once again reinstated the importance of Emotional Intelligence in our day to day living. The Chief Guest for the Valedictory Function, Fr. Emidio Pinto addressing the august gathering put forth his own philosophy that helped him tremendously namelt "do what you are doing". Mr. Mayuresh Wagle proposed the Vote Of Thanks. On this day the Post Graduate Dept. Of Psychology, released its second annual magazine "BECOMING" at the hands of Dr. Philip Mathew. The compares for the seminar were Ms. Sharon Fernandes and Cedila Pereira. _______________________________________________ Goanet mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.goanet.org/mailman/listinfo/goanet
