Friday Balcao the fortnightly discussion event to be held on 28th February will feature the topic, Beach Management for better amenities in Goas' coastal tourism belt.
As part of a series on public interest issues Friday Balcao will focus on the need for proper management of Goa's beaches considering that they are situated in Village Panchayat and Municipal Areas.
Mr. Lamberto Gomes who has spend considerable time overseas and a member of the Candolim Residents and Consumer Forum will lead the discussion. Mr. Gomes will share his findings on the management of beaches in Europe, USA/Canada and the Caribbean. He will elaborate on the Blue Flag Campaign initiated by the Foundation for Environmental Education(FEE).
Among the issues to be discussed in the Balcao are Water Quality, Environmental Education and Information, Safety and Services and Environmental Management as pre-requisites for proper beach management.
In the context of the Goan beaches the interests of varied beach users like the Ramponkars, Shack owners, domestic and foreign tourists, tourist boats owners, water sports entrepreneurs and local residents will also be discussed.
The availability of amenities like lifeguards, pollution control, garbage clearance, beach lighting, drinking water, changing rooms, first aid & medicare, mobile toilets and tourist police service will also be reviewed.
The discussion will also examine the role of the various Govt. agencies like the Tourism Department and Department of Environment, besides the local bodies like the Panchayats and Municipalities, the tourist trade and NGO's.
The outcome of the discussions and the action plan suggestions will be submitted to various citizens groups, as well as the concerned private & Govt. agencies.

Friday Balcao will be from 4pm to 6pm at the Goa Desc Resource Centre No.11 Liberty Apartments Feira Alta, Mapusa and is open to members of the public.
