Nothing Indian about 'Indian' stars at Grammy -----
Sify News

New Delhi, Feb 25

Newspapers splashed photos of jazz singer Norah Jones
across the front pages on Tuesday after the daughter of
sitar legend Ravi Shankar picked up five Grammy awards.

But most of the press -- usually eager to highlight any
successes of Indians on the world stage -- hesitated at
declaring national triumph over the US-born and -bred
jazz vocalist.

"Our girl at the Grammys?" asked the title of a special
spread in The Indian Express. It noted that the sultry
singer, also the daughter of New York concert producer
Sue Jones, rarely saw her father while growing up.

"There is not even one percent resemblance between
father and daughter's work," Sandeep Chowta, a
Bollywood music director, told the newspaper.
Shankar, 82, said as much himself when he addressed
reporters here Monday. "She has been born and brought
up in America, and her music has its foundations in
jazz, pop and the western style. I cannot take credit
for it," he said.

Jones, too, had hinted at her difficult relationship
with her father in a recent interview. "I don't like
talking about him because he doesn't have anything to
do with me or my music."

Jones was not the only artist with an Indian connection
to win a Grammy. Tony Kanal, the bassist for No Doubt,
is of Indian origin.

No Doubt, known for its fusion of ska and pop, won the
Grammy for best pop performance by a duo or group.
Kanal has been in the group for 14 years and had made
headlines with his affair with the group's lead singer,
Gwen Stefani. AFP and agencies
