MAN SUCCUMBS TO BURN INJURIES: A 50-year-old man from Nuvem-Belloi, Sebastiao Colaco, succumbed to his burn injuries. The middle-aged man, reportedly paralysed, sustained burn injuries when the palm leaves that were burning in the fire-place came in contact with him. (H)

JUDGE PROCEEDS TO VARCA: The infamous 1989 countermanding of elections case will achieve another distinction of sorts in its 13-year-long saga when the trial judge along with the parties concerned will be proceeding to Varca to examine a prosecution witness on Wednesday. Former Benaulim ML, Dr Maurilio Furtado, who was cited as a prosecution witness, had moved the trial court praying for the appointment of a commission to examine since he could not personally testify in the court. He had agreed to bear the expenses involved in the appointment of the commission. (H)

UNEMPLOYMENT WORRIES GOVERNOR: Governor Kidar Nath Sahani expressed concern over growing unemployment and called for efforts to save the youth from lapsing into depression. Sahani made an appeal to a cross section of people who he met at the Raj Bhavan for a tete-a-tete on February 25 and these included heads of religious institutions, journalists and others. (GT)
SELF-EMPLOYMENT: Governor Kidar Nath Sahani has called for sustained efforts to convince the Goan youth to go in for occupations like dairy farming, floriculture, pottery, wood carving, etc, instead of craving for government jobs. Stating that Goa is rich with resources, the Governor said proper utilization and exploitation can take Goa very high at the national level. (H)
RACHOL KHAZANS: Salcete mamlatdar Prasad Lolayekar has called a meeting of the tenant association and farmers from Ilha de Rachol at his office at 10 am today (Feb 26) to resolve the issue of auction of sluice gates at Rachol village. (GT)
TRAWLER OWNERS TO CHALLENGE REDDY'S ORDER: The trawler owners have decided to challenge before the Appellate board yesterday's (Feb 24) order of Mr PS Reddy, Adjudicating Officer under the Marine Regulation Act and Commissioner of Excise for 'wrongly and illegally punishing the trawler owners for allegedly violating the ban on fishing imposed during the monsoon season'. Advocate for the trawler owners, Aires Rodrigues, has stated that Mr Reddy's order was devoid of any legal substance and without proper application of mind. (H)
DGP SANDHU TRANSFERRED: Director General of Police (GDP) Gurucharan Singh Sandhu has been transferred to New Delhi by an order issued by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, New Delhi on February 25. Seva Das, IPS, who was attached to Delhi police will be the new DGP of Goa and is likely to take charge by next week. Incidentally, Seva Das had worked as additional SP in Goa from 1978 to 1981. (GT)
KIRANPANI-AROUNDA BRIDGE: The members of Aronda Action Committee, in a memorandum submitted to the president of BJP and Mandrem MLA Prof Laxmikant Parsekar, has urged him to take immediate measures to start the construction of the Kiranpani-Aronda bridge. For the residents of Shiroda, Aronda, Kudal, Vengurla (Sindhurdurg) the bridge is a vital link since it connects them to Pernem, Mapusa and Panjim where the markets, hospitals and colleges are located. DRIVE AGAINST ENCROACHMENTS: In a surprise move on February 25, the Panaji Municipal Council cleared all encroachments made by shopkeepers on the payments. (NT)
IN MAPUSA: The Mapusa Municipal Council launched an encroachment clearance drive in the Mapusa Municipal market and cleared all projections and hoardings from the footpaths that were causing obstruction. (NT)
GT EDITOR IS PAC CHIEF: Gomantak Times editor Pramod Khandeparkar was elected chairman of the Press Accreditation Committee at its first meeting held at Bambolim Beach resort on February 24. He defeated Herald editor Rajan Narayan in a straight fight by 6-2 votes. (GT)
REVIEW FAMILY LAWS: Participants at a workshop "Reviewing Family Laws", organised by Bailancho Saad, demanded that any review of family laws must involve consultative processes and the law revised compositely and comprehensively. (H)
ALLIANCE FRANCAISE COMMITTEE: The Alliance Francaise de Goa has a new Executive Committee, voted in on January 11. The high profile Executive Committee comprises designer Wendell Rodricks as President, singer Remo Fernandes as Vice President, Antonio Lourenco as Secretary and Jerome Marrel as Treasurer. Michelle Fernandes and Yveline Hayes are Executive Committee members alongwith Ms Belinda Fernandes, Director of the Alliance Francaise de Goa.
THREE SUICIDES: Ms Jasmina Fernandes, a 20-year-old resident of Dando-Sanguem, committed suicide on February 25, by hanging herself to a ceiling fan by using a nylon rope. It is not known as to why the girl took such a drastic step. In Curchorem, Prabhaker Gaunker alias Poro, aged 50, committed suicide by hanging himself. Joaquim Soares, a 35-year-old resident of St Jose Areal, committed suicide by jumping into a well. (NT)
