On October 1, 2002, I compiled the following short bio of one Norah Jones and then posted it in one of the other special-interest Internet Groups I belong to. By that time, the Rock/Pop Music Radio Stations here had just started to air her now-famous hit "Don't Know Why.....". But beyond that hardly anyone here knew then who she was. Asit K. Ghosh Rockledge, Florida, USA ============================================================ She was born on March 30, 1979 in New York City. She moved to the Dallas suburb of Grapevine, Texas at 4, began singing in church choirs at 5, commenced piano lessons at 7, and briefly played saxophone in junior high. At 15, she enrolled in Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts. While still in high school, she won the Down Beat Student Music Awards for "Best Jazz Vocalist" and "Best Original Composition" in 1996, and earned a second SMA for "Best Jazz Vocalist" in 1997. After graduation, she entered the University of North Texas -- nationally renowned for its music programs -- where she majored in Jazz Piano. She also sang with a band call Laszlo, playing what she describes as "dark, jazzy rock". In 1999, she moved to New York City and appeared regularly with the funk-fusion band Wax Poetic. But she soon assembled her own group. In October 2000, this lineup recorded a selection of demos for Blue Note Records, which signed her in January 2001. Lately, her sultry voice had been filling the radio waves across the US with her song "Don�t know why I didn�t come" from her debut album "Come Away With Me". The song is mostly Jazz with a hint of Country Blues. She is on vocals, Piano and Wurlitzer Electric Piano in this album that blends Jazz, Soul, Country and Folk-Pop. Her name is Norah Jones. Her mother is a record producer named Sue Cooper and her father is the world-renowned Sitar maestro Ravi Shankar. That makes her a half-sister to Ravi Shankar�s famous daughter Anoushka. She was conceived at the end of Sue and Ravi's 9-year relationship. Norah's earliest musical influences came NOT from his father but from her mother's extensive LP collection and from 'oldies' radio. Norah supposedly did not publicize her father's identity to gain a foothold in the music industry. Even her school records show "FATHER UNKNOWN".
