NITISH CUTS FARES: A soft railway budget for 2003-04 yesterday (Feb 26) proposed no hike in passenger fares and freight rates and made cheaper Rajdhani and Shatadbi travel and carriage of a number of goods like LPG, diesel, petrol and cement by rationalizing the fare structure. Railway Minister Nitish Kumar also proposed to reduce fares in select trains in non-peak period o give competitive edge in the face of similar concession extended by airlines. (PTI report in GT)

TOURISM SECTOR HAILS VASCO-CHENNAI TRAIN: Introduction of a direct train from Vasco to Chennai and also from Trivandrum to Jodhpur, linking Goa, as announced in the Railway Budget on Wednesday, has been widely welcomed by the members of the tourism trade. (H)

MEET ON 'ECO-CITY' DEVELOPMENT: Though it was felt that any one of the cities in Goa should be adopted towards development as an 'eco-city' as a pilot project, a meeting of NGOs, technical experts and others to chart out a road map with an objective of making Goa 'clean and green', proved inconclusive. The meeting had been convened by Confederation of Indian Industries at Hotel Fort Aguada to cap a two-day seminar on "Clean and Green Goa" and to work out ways to adopt some of the eco-friendly technologies, which were presented by experts from concerned companies. MEMORANDUM OVER PANCHAYAT RAJ BILL: The Congress legislator from Calangute, Mr Agnelo Fernandes, in a memorandum presented to the Governor, Mr Kidar Nath Sahani, urged him to withhold assent to the Goa Panchayat Raj (seventh amendment) Bill and urged that it ought to be reserved for the consideration of the President of India. YOUTH URGED TO ATTEND CITY RALLY: Leading Konkani protagonists including Working President of the Shenoi Goembab Centenary Committee, Arvind Bhatikar, former chairman of the Konkani Academy and Sunaparant editor Uday Bhembre commended the initiative taken by the Hit Rakhan Manch to hold a public rally to reinforce guarantees for jobs for Goans at Panjim on February 27 at 4 pm, at the Azad Maidan. Both have appealed to all Goan youth, cutting across religious, linguistic and other barriers, to attend the rally in large numbers. (H)

GOA "CYBERAGE" TIES UP WITH SAMSUNG: Samsung Electronics India Information and Telecommunications Limited announced its partnership with the Goa government to the supply of its computers under the "Cyberage Student Scheme", at a function held at Goa Marriott on February 26�CM Parrikar expressed his happiness that a global company like Samsung had shown keen interest in supporting government's initiative of promoting IT in Goa. JOBS, HUMAN RESOURCES: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has said that human factor should form focus of the Tenth Plan and the target should be generation of employment and development of human resources. He was speaking at the Goa State Planning and Development Board meeting in Panjim on February 26. (H)

PANAJI PLUNGED IN PARKING PROBLEM: Despite changes to this city's landscape and improvement in the quality of its roads, Panaji is still facing a major problemparking. With an estimated 27,000 vehicles, of different shapes and sizes, entering the city on a daily basis, arterial roads and by-lanes are often blocked by vehicles illegally parked by uncaring drivers. CARING FOR RESCUED BULLS: Nearly 31 bulls are having a field day t the PMC animal shelter in St Inez after being rescued by the police at a slaughter house in Vasco recently. However, the Panjim Municipal Council is in a quandary as the major task of feeding the animals has been rendered to them and are not sure as to how long they will have to do this. It is also not known as to who will take custody of the stranded animals. (H)

SALINE WATER STAGNATION: Salcete mamlatdar Prasad Lolayekar yesterday issued an order to two tenant associations from Ilha de Rachol to drain out stagnant water from the Khazan lands within two days. (GT)

VARCA HOUSE 'CONVERTED' INTO COURT ROOM: The Varca residence of former Benaulim MLA, Dr Maurilio Furtado, was literally converted into a court room on Wednesday (February 26) morning when he was examined by a commission in the infamous 1989 countermanding of elections conspiracy case. The court proceedings were conducted at Furtado's dining hall with the spacious table coming in handy for the purpose. The proceedings went unhindered for nearly one-hour-and-a-half, which saw the prosecution moving the court to declare Furtado a hostile witness. (H)

'KILLER' TRUCK: Yoganand Naik, resident of Malwada-Madkai, was crushed to death under the wheels of a speeding truck at Mangueshi on February 26. Naik was proceeding to Ponda on his motorcycle. (GT)

ONE DIES: One Nazareth Barreto (65) of Cansaulim succumbed to his injuries at Goa Medical College Hospital. The deceased had fallen off a rickshaw while traveling from Cortalim to Vasco. (H)

"ID CARDS TO OUTSIDERS": The Velim-Betul Citizens Committee has demanded issuance of identity cards for outsiders working at and around the Cutbona jetty and also the compulsory registration of these workers with the police and panchayat. This follows a molestation incident at Baradi, Velim, on February 20 afternoon wherein an unknown person, believed to be an outsider, outraged the modesty of a local woman working in the paddy field. ILLEGAL EXCAVATION AT ASSAGAO: On a complaint from the Comunidade attorney, Mr Cajetan Raposo, Anjuna police sent a police team almost 3 km into the jungles where the illegal excavation (on Assagao Comunidade land) is taking place. Anjuna police inspector, Mr Wilson D'Souza, said that one truck driver, Sarvesh Naik from Assagao, was detained and levied a fine on him of Rs.800. (NT)

TO CONVERT GOA INTO TECHNOLOGICAL HUB: Chairman of the Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Nitin Kunkolienkar on February 26 stressed upon the need to convert Goa into a "technological hub". With this view in mind, he has suggested that a Board be set up which will function as a "mentor group", comprising experts from different fields such as the Goa Telecom, PWD, ICAR, NIO, and top industries such as the Dempo group, which will look into new challengers of the future through simulation. He was speaking at the inauguration of the National Science Day Science Fiesta 2-003 and CSIR Diamond Jubilee Exhibition organised by the Goa Science Centre, NIO and Department of Science and Technology at Miramar. FESTIVAL OF GOAN CRAFTS: The Goa Handicrafts Rural and Small Scale Industries Development Corporation will organise a five-day festival of Goan crafts at Fatorda from 12 March. The fiesta, titled "Aprant Maand 2003" will be held at the Ravindra Bhavan site till March 16 and will feature a number of traditional Goan artisans. (GT)

TRIBUTE TO ROBERTO: Roberto Alvares, one of Goa's acclaimed sons in the field of entertainment and events, who was also the president of Clube Vasco da Gama, is being honoured in a tribute show called "Roberto: The Legend Lives on". The show, which will be led by Lulu, Filipe and Ignatius band providing old time ballroom music, will be held on February 28 evening at Mandovi Riviera and joined by Lucio Miranda. (NT)

SALGAOCAR HOLD CHURCHILL AMIDST CROWD TROUBLE: Salgaocar Sports Club twice came back from behind to hold Churchill Bros Sports Club 2-2 in a charged-up OIL PSU National Football League encounter at Fatorda on February 26�Trouble erupted after the encounter as angry crowd, mostly Churchill bros supporters, vent their anger at referee Walter Pereira and assistant referee T Pradip of Tamil Nadu. Both officials came under attack for approving Salgaocar's equalizer, after Sunday Seah appeared suspiciously offside. (H)

OFF-FIELD OFFENCE: Salgaocar Spots Club president Shivanand Salgaocar today (Feb 26) demanded "strictest possible action" against Churchill Bros striker Yakubu Yusif, after the Ghanaian allegedly assaulted Salgaocar keeper Kalyan Chaubey, 25 minutes after the bitter encounter had ended. (H)
