GOACOM DAILY NEWS CLIPPINGS
March 02, 2003

COLOURFUL CARNIVAL BEGINS: The lively four-day Carnival celebrations took off formally with King Momo's retinue leading a colourful float parade yesterday evening, with 79 groups participating. There was a lot of dancing and throbbing musicclowns, folk depicting rural Goan occupations and its spectrum of traditional occupations, there were company-sponsored groups with top bands playing. There were foreigners telling people about Ingo's Saturday Nite Bazaar in Arpora. Yes, there was lots to see and thousands of people crowding along the riverside road from the Patto Bridge to Campal. There were quite a few foreign tourists enjoying the scene. Of course, there were occasional yawns when the float took longer than usual to make the scene. One also wonders why the dancers and handsomely attired performers have to hide behind the vehicles (the commercial ones conveniently overshadowing the performers behind it and those above perched too high atop or in between the huge, black speaker systems) carrying the floats. The hot sun and the long route probably proves a bit too much for some of the young dancers, to retain a cheerful look while going through the motions of the dance/drill. The parade moves to Margao today where it will be flagged off at 3.30 pm from the Holy Spirit School square. By the time the revelry rounds up on the eve of Ash Wednesday people in the main cities will have witnessed the float parades, besides the locally organised dances and other cultural programmes at each of the main celebration centres. Viva Carnival, Viva Carnaval!...and not just from Sunday to Tuesday as it used to be in the good ole daysbut beginning on Saturday. (GoaNOW)

CREATING WEALTH OUT OF MINES (2): "Environmentally well managed mines would continue to bring prosperity to Goa with adoption of better technologies and management practices. The environmental certification ISO-14001 obtained by several leading mining companies in Goa proves that things are changing rapidly. The Goa Mineral Foundation is the new and active player for undertaking people oriented projects. Such efforts would definitely lead to a better and improved environmental quality in the mining belt. There is no need to paint this 60-year-old industry as devil. On the contrary, efforts have to be made at all levels to work closely with all the stakeholders depending on this industry so that Goa's economy grows stronger and the ecological concerns are taken care of."
